  2. Epidemiology • Over 20-30 million cases worldwide each year • Incidence of sepsis is projected to increase by 1.5% per year • Mainly due to the growing use of interventional procedures and increasing numbers of vulnerable individuals Sepsis kills 1 person EVERY TWO MINUTES

  3. Sepsis In the United States • Most expensive condition treated in U.S. hospitals • $24 billion per year • The annual incidence in the US of severe sepsis is approximately 3.0 cases per 1,000

  5. AIM • In 2017, the average time from arrival to antibiotics was 121 minutes for all sepsis patients arriving to the WC EC. • Our goal is to reduce time of arrival to start time of first antibiotic in sepsis patients arriving to the Emergency Center to > 60 minutes.

  10. Pre Arrival • CIP called for Fever Neutropenia patient. • CIP nurse enters encounter in EPIC. • MD2 notified by CIP nurse and antibiotic order set placed

Results • Enhanced communication among all team members. • Decreased antibiotic administration times by 33% for all sepsis patients since 2017. • Improved time awareness and expectations of treatment of patients with fever and neutropenia. • Earlier recognition and treatment of patients with fever and neutropenia.
