  3. Background to Japanese Studies Study of Japan in Malaysia did not matter much in the 1950s and the early 1960s. Japan began to impress the world with the speed and quality of its economic recovery. Demand for Japanese Language has also increased. Active supports from the Japanese government and other institutions. Japan is an important economic and strategic partner for Malaysia. The expansion of Japanese Language to Japanese Studies in Malaysia is inevitable.

  4. Definition of Japanese Studies Japanese Studies is not an academic disciplinary subject but an area studies subject. Japanese Studies is multidisciplinary. Japanese Studies examine, teach and research about Japan. Any undergraduate and taught post-graduate program of Japanese Studies must have modules.

  6. Initiatives taken by :Higher learning institutions (cont.) University of Malaya (UM) First university to introduce Japanese Language in 1966. Existing Japanese Studies programs are focused on the Japanese language education. The Japan Studies Program (JSP) was set up in the 1993/1994 academic session. 50 million yen Japanese ODA to Japan Studies in 1995. Japan Foundation contributed Japanese Studies books and arranged for visiting professorship. March 2012 - there are three departments/units contribute to Japanese Studies development.

  11. Initiatives taken by :Higher learning institutions (cont.) University of Utara Malaysia (UUM) Japanese language courses were first introduced during the 1997/1998. As of 2004, there are five Japanese language teachers where four are Japanese citizens. Sabah University of Malaysia (UMS) The Center for the Promotion of Knowledge and Language Learning (PPIB) offers Japanese language courses. Until January 2004, there are about 600 students who have registered for Japanese language courses.

  12. Initiatives taken by :Higher learning institutions (cont.) National University of Malaysia (UKM) Japanese language courses were offered in 1978. Students are given options to incorporate the language component as part of their studies. As of January 2004, there are 161 students enrolled in Japanese language courses. Putra University of Malaysia (UPM) Japanese language courses until January 2004 had a total of about 300 students at basic degree level.

University of Science Malaysia (USM) Until January 2004, there are 725 students at the main campus in Penangand 267 students at the Perakbranch. University of Technology Malaysia (UTM) Undertaken by he Department of Modern Languages. In 1992, a preparatory student program for those who will continue their studies to Japan was established.

Initiatives taken by :Japanese Studies bodies Malaysian Association of Japanese Studies (MAJAS) Formed on 15 August 1998 - objectives include: To offer opportunities for interaction among scholars. To encourage networking. To help in disseminating research results about Japan. To organize national or international seminars, lectures and talks.

Malaysian Association of Japanese Studies (MAJAS) 1999 - seven seminars were organized by MAJAS. 2000 - MAJAS began its first activity with organizing an international conference. 2007/2008 – MAJAS greatly honored by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Japan. 2008/2009 - MAJAS organized two public lectures by distinguished scholars of Japan. 2009/2010 - MAJAS organized two public lectures by four professors from Japan. February 22-23, 2012- 3rd JSA-ASEAN International Conference.

  16. Initiatives taken by :Japanese Studies Bodies (cont.) Center for Japan Studies (CJS) Established in 1999. Focuses on trade, investment, finance, technology, tourism, human resource development, ODA, politics, defense and security. Objectives include: To undertake research on, and involving Japan. To provide opportunities for greater information exchange and discussion about Japan. To disseminate knowledge of Japan to a wider audience.

  17. Encouraging progress of Japanese Studies Efforts to establish Japanese language courses and courses related to Japan has multiplied. Organization of seminars and conferences about Japanhas expanded. An escalation of interest among researchers and graduate students.

  18. Challenges in ensuring a more rapid development Research on Japan, however has not yet established a firm foundation. Japanese Studies scholars are still a minor group in Malaysia. Research capacity in humanities and social sciences within Japan Studies is still inadequate. Sufficient research momentum is yet to be developed.

  35. Concluding Remarks Serious development of Japanese studies only began in the 1990s. Dedication and commitment is still at a minimum level. Number of Japanese Studies experts and acknowledgment of the importance are still low. Chair of Japanese Studies should be formed. Lack of research materials. If these three problems can be overcome, the advancementof Japanese Studies in Malaysia will be speedy because the foundation already exists.
