  2. Materials • white paper (12x 18) • black paper strips (1/2” x 9”) • white glue • scissors

  3. REVIEW: • lines can make a shapes • lines can make patterns • lines show direction

  4. Teaching the Lesson • I begin this lesson by showing examples. • I point out how a negative shape (space) can be just as important as a positive shape. Then, I demonstrate how one cannot make a flat circle unless the strip is cut. I cut the strip. It becomes a broken line. The broken line is arranged in a circle. I point out the “space”, the negative shape inside the broken line. • I demonstrate how one can arrange these strips to make patterns.

  5. Easy Lesson • Third grade does not usually have any trouble gluing the 1/2” strips. • I suggest that they cut and arrange the strips before gluing. Most students like to glue as they arrange the strips on the white background. • Some students even cut some of the strips thinner (lengthwise).
