  1. Lesson 15 – Section 1 Being a World Christian

  2. What About Me?

  3. Do not start by asking what God’s will is for you. Instead, ask and seek what God’s desire is in this world and how you can be involved in it.

  4. Insert yourself into God’s Story instead of trying to insert Him into your own.

  5. Do not waste time waiting for some miraculous call from God to begin a radical life of obedience. Start right away in being obedient to Him in all that He has shown you.

  6. Finding Your Call • What creates a divine discontent within you? • What makes your heart sing?

  7. Having a War-Time Lifestyle

  8. Missions is a lifestyle, not simply an event or activity we do.

  9. Our Lives Are Models “You also became imitators of us and of the Lord, having received the word in much tribulation with the joy of the Holy Spirit.” (1 Thess 1:6)

  10. Paul doesn’t talk about missions, because it was all a part of what they were. – Larry Walker

  11. Live a Simplified Life "For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also” (Luke 12:34).

  12. Live a purposeful missional lifestyle in all seasons and facets of life.

  13. Relating to the Church

  14. What is the church? How do you relate to the church?

  15. When you focus on the task of mission alone, you tend to become critical, skeptical, degrading… Love the church and treat it as a bride. – Larry Walker

  16. The missional church will primarily focus on people in their own culture…not the 10/40 window. - Larry Walker

  17. Lesson 15 – Section 2 Different Roles In Missions

  18. Going

  19. Acts 1:8 “But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth."

  20. New York City Metro • 2 Million Jews • 800,000 Muslims • 350,000 Hindus • 100,000 Sikhs

  21. Short-Term Missions • Almost 1 million Americans go on a short-term mission annually

  22. Long-Term Missions • Long-Term Missionaries are Not Growing in Number from America

  23. Sending

  24. Out of every $1,000 given in North American churches, five cents is given to reach the one billion Muslims in the 10/40 Window. • In areas of the 10/40 Window, there is only one missionary for every one million people. • American Christian spend 95% of their offering on home-based ministry, 4.5% on cross-cultural efforts in already-reached people groups, and only .5% to reach the unreached • Ralph Winter – “The nearly two billion dollars American evangelicals give per year to mission agencies is one fourth of what they spend on weight-loss programs.”

  25. Allocating ourresources for mission Used with permission from Daryl McCarthy, 2007.

  26. Sending entails much more than writing a check. • Involvement in the lives of missionaries is a huge part.

  27. Mobilizing

  28. If there is a wildfire, you do not go and try to put it out yourself. It is much wiser to go and wake up a hundred sleeping firemen! - Ralph Winter

  29. Welcoming

  30. International Students • Over 650,000 international students and scholars are in the United States annually • Around 80% of these will never set foot in an American home • Around 50% of the heads of state around the world once studied in America

  31. Returning Missionaries • Adjustment • Acknowledgement • Counseling • Logistics

  34. Lesson 15 – Section 3 Partnering In Missions

  35. The Need ofPartnership

  36. Definition of Partnership “Association of two or more autonomous bodies who form a trusting relationship and fulfill agreed upon expectations by sharing complementary strengths and resources to reach their mutual goal.” – Luis Bush

  37. Types ofPartnership

  38. Your Own Church Other Churches with a Similar Vision Mission Agencies Missionaries People Groups Business and Development Governments Two-Thirds World Missions Partnering With:

  39. Partnership with the Two-Thirds World

  40. Abundance of Wealth 70% of all finances in the evangelical world today are in North America and the UK

  41. And the Scripture Says… • “…to whom much is given, from him much will be required” (Luke 12:48). • “But whoever has the world’s goods, and sees his brother in need and closes his heart against him, how does the love of God abide in him?” (1 John 3:17) • “For this is not for the ease of others and for your affliction, but by way of equality – at this present time your abundance being a supply for their need, so that their abundance also may become a supply for your need, that there may be equality” (2 Cor 8:13-14).

  42. The first Christians “began selling their property and possessions and were sharing them with all,” (Acts 2:45), and “not one of them claimed that anything belonging to him was his own, but all things were common property to them” (Acts 4:32).

  43. Avoid the Extremes • Of being so afraid of dependency that no funds are given. • Of saying that the Two-Thirds World is poor and that all funds should come from elsewhere.

  44. Have a common goal or purpose Have a teachable spirit Share ownership including finances Westerners need to stop being controlling Missionaries should model the way Prepare people with partnership in mind Invest less capital Enable self-developing capabilities of the Two-Thirds Word church Fund mission efforts, not national churches/pastors Give through organizations, not directly to people Guidelines for Healthy Partnerships

  45. Establish appropriate accountability structures Research potential partners locally Make sure the right personnel and leadership are in place Communicate openly with one another Agree on partnership details Need to be flexible and willing to take risks Commit to being led by the Holy Spirit Guidelines for Healthy Partnerships (cont.)
