  3. What Happened • Explosion was caused by a failure in the tanks cooling system. • Chemicals involved where dry nitrate, and acetate salts in a tank of highly active waste.

  4. Evacuation • Mass evacuation was required do to contamination from Strontium-90 • Strontium-90 has a half-life of 10-20 years.

  5. INES rating 6 • Kyshtym nuclear accident is second in line for most disastrous nuclear incident in history • Second only to Chernobyl

  6. Effects • Forced to evacuate 10,000 people in the effected area due to reports of people’s skin falling off. • Estimated to have caused 200 deaths due to cancer.
