  2. 1.Introduction

  3. Victor Hugo1802-1885 • The son of a general at Napoleon’s time. • He started to write the Miserables in 1845. • In 1848, Hugo gave his support to the newly-elected president Napoleon. • In 1951, Napoleon claimed to be the emperor, which upset Hugo and he turned to be against him.

  4. Victor Hugo 1802-1885 • During the banishment, he devoted himself to writing les Miserable. • In 1870, the Third Republic was founded and Hugo returned to France. • 1885年雨果逝世,雨果靈柩停於於凱旋門下供人瞻仰,巴黎巿民為之守夜,法國上下舉國哀悼

  7. Jean Valjean "What have I done? Sweet Jesus what have I done? Become a thief in the night, become a dog on the run!"

  8. Javert "The world is inside out, the world is upside down!" "My heart is stone and still it trembles...... the world I have know is lost in shadows."

  9. Fantine "But the tigers come at night, with their voices soft as thunder. As they tear you hope apart. As they turn your dreams to shame!"

  10. Cosette "How strange the feeling that my life's begun at last! This change, can people really fall in love so fast?!"

  11. The Thenardiers "Kidney of a horse, liver of a cat, filling up the sasuages with this and that."

  12. Marius Pontmercy "Life without Cosette means nothing at all!  Will you weep Cosette, should Marius fall? Would you weep, Cosette, for me?"

  13. Gavroche "This is my school my high society here in the slums of St. Michele. We live on crumbs and humble piety tough on the teeth but what the Hell!"

  15. (Line1-4) • Victor Hugo’s novel Les Miserables capturespeople’s imaginations. • This story of poverty, revolution, and romance strikes a chord in the hearts of people everywhere.

  16. (Line6-8) • Adapted from the 1,200-page novel, Les Misserables, or Les Miz asthe musical version is often called, captures hearts in the theater.

  19. (Line9-12) • The story begins in 1815, when Jean Valjean just leaves prison. • Though he tries, Valjean can get no work because of his criminal past. • He finally steals some valuable silver from a kind bishop. The police catch him and return him to the bishop’s house.

  20. Jean Valjean is nothing now. Another storymust begin! • To Valjean’s surprise, the bishop tells the police he gave Valjean the silver as a present. (Line 12-13)

  21. At the end of the Day • As the story continues, Valjean does his best to be an honest man.( Line16-17 )

  22. I dreamed a dream

  23. Who am I? • All the while, a policeman is pursuing him because he broke his parole. (Line21-22)

  24. There is a castleon a cloud • He vows to raise a dying mother’s little girl as his own. (Line18)

  25. Master of the House

  26. I didn't see you there, forgive me • He helps a group of students and the Paris poor as they fight against injustice. He saves the man his “daughter” loves.Line 19

  30. Inspiration 從1845年開始,雨果開始寫作。在這本著作中將許多雨果生活中的經驗寫入了書中。 • 第一是他的一位教士好友Miollis和一個刑滿釋放犯的事:這名刑滿釋放犯剛從監獄出來,當他回到故鄉,想在別人家中借宿時,主人一聽到他是個囚犯,便斷然拒絕並請他到別處去。當他絕望時,一位仁慈的教士發現了他,並給予他極大的幫助與關懷。這位教士便是Miollis,雨果曾聽過許多他樂善好施的事蹟。

  31. Inspiration 從1845年開始,雨果開始寫作。在這本著作中將許多雨果生活中的經驗寫入了書中。 • 另一天晚上,雨果在參加一個宴會後回家的路上。天下著雪。一個青年出現在一位姑娘身後,跟著趁她不注意時將一大團雪塞入她的衣領中。姑娘憤怒地轉身,和這青年扭打在一起,雨果剛想上前制止時,附近的警察也趕來一把架起了她,帶到了警局。雨果也跟了上去。在警局裡不論她如何說她什麼壞事也沒幹,警察局長決定關她六個月。這時雨果看不下去了,進來將剛剛的事以見證人的身份一五一十的說給警察局長聽,但是警察局長完全不屑一顧,雨果對警察局長的傲慢感到十分憤怒。警察局長一聽他是雨果,馬上改變了態度。

  32. Inspiration從1845年開始,雨果開始寫作。在這本著作中將許多雨果生活中的經驗寫入了書中。 • 除了Jean Valjean是刑滿釋放犯的化身,Miollis是Myriel的原型,Fantine以那位在警局受到冤屈的姑娘的故事為基礎,雨果也在小說中加了一名寄託自己年輕時代的人。這人就是Marius。他和雨果一樣有個在戰場多年的父親。

  34. 雨果作品特色: 讚頌真、善、美,鞭撻黑暗、醜惡、殘暴。 •  詩作方面--有著瑰麗的色彩,充滿天馬行空的想像力,以及 絕妙的音樂性,多方面的用字與巧妙的用韻法,達 到優雅、精美、雄偉、樸實的非常境界。 • 小說方面--多半寫社會小說描寫人生百態為主,融合現實主義與浪漫主義,情節生動、結構離奇、感情澎湃、氣勢磅礡,震懾人心,膾炙人口。 • 劇作方面--悲喜交雜的浪漫劇。運用豐富的想像、強烈的情緒、無邊的氣魄、美麗的詩詞,造成一種強烈而矛盾的戲劇效果。   • 畫作方面--作品包括名著插畫、人物畫、風景畫。描繪作品中的情節,展現內心的思緒,而以水墨畫西方山水。十九年流亡期間,「海」成了他繪畫的主題。
