Development Defects • muscular dystrophy • degeneration and atrophy of muscles • fibers enlarge due to fat and connective tissue deposits • Duchenne’s MD • abnormal gene located on X chromosome • affects 1 in 3000 boys • usually diagnoses around age 3 • causes weakness of muscles, usually pelvic girdle first • Myotonic MD • caused by a genetic mutation • most common form of MD in adults • myotonia - a stiffening of the muscles after use

Muscular Disorders • myasthenia gravis • comes on during adulthood • usually women under 40 • due to shortage of acetylcholine receptors in neuromuscular junction • possibly autoimmune disease • drooping of upper eyelids, difficulty swallowing and breathing, generalized muscle weakness • leads to respiratory failure and death

  4. Muscular Disorders • myositis • inflammation of skeletal muscles • caused by injury, infection or autoimmune disease • polymyositis • muscle weakness, usually in the muscles closest to the trunk of your body. • dermatomyositis • skin rash with muscle weakness

Muscular Disorders • Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) • Lou Gehrig's disease • attacks neurons in brain and spinal cord. • early symptoms • trouble walking or running • trouble writing • speech problems • Eventually, lose your strength and cannot move. • causes respiratory failure • usually strikes between age 40 and 60 • more common in men • unknown cause • can run in families • no cure • Medications can relieve symptoms and/or prolong survival.
