Search operators • And –retrieves records containing all of the words • Example: politics AND Canada • OR –retrieves records containing any of the words • Example: war OR conflict • “ ” -exact phrase • Example: “partisan politics” • *- truncation: retrieves all words that start with the letters entered. • Example: government* (government, governments, governmental) • ?- replaces one character in a word • Example: wom?n (retrieves woman OR women) NOTE: These apply to nearly all databases

  8. Check the following: • Who is the author of this document? Is this person or organization expert in the field? • Are thegoalsof the sponsors/authors clearly stated? Look for possible bias. • Is this a peer-reviewed source? Is there any editorial control? • Is the publication or revision date provided? • Target audience: what is the level of information? • Are there links to other sources or from other resources, a bibliography? • See also “How to use the Web for research” on our website

  9. Yearbooks & Handbooks • “A concise reference book providing specific information about a subject or location.” • Published yearly = Yearbook • Provides context for a topic and helps define or narrow a topic • Overview of an IGO or Country

Yearbooks & Handbooks • Europa World Plus(online): “Provides historical, economic and statistical information on over 250 countries.” And International Orgs • Yearbook of International Organizations(print): Authoritative handbook, includes IGOs, directory type information: structure, mission, activities, commentary, etc. • Political Handbook of the World (online & print): Supplies information on Purpose of the IGO, its origin and development recent activities
