  1. Section 13: Pgs 265-End The Road

  2. Who is the ‘they’ the man is talking about on page 265? • The other men that were with the man and the woman. The Man alludes to these people when he has the discussion with the woman and her dying husband. He asks her where the rest of them are and why they left them behind.

  3. Why does the boy not want the man to tell him a story? • The Man probably tells the boy stories from books that he remembers. The boy thinks those stories aren’t true. This is because a) he doesn’t know what some of the things are and b) there isn’t a whole lot of good in the world. Suggests boy is becoming jaded.

  4. What is the significance in the boy telling the man that he had heard him crying (270)? • The Boy knows more than he lets the Man know. The Man is constantly telling him to be strong and not cry, while he himself is crying. It’s hypocritical and the Boy is calling him out on it.

  5. According to the man, what was the bravest thing her ever did (272)? • Getting up in the morning. To the Man, everyday is a challenge. He is in pain, he’s tired, he just wants to rest, but he needs to be brave and keep going for the Boy.

  6. On page 275, they leave the cart behind what foreshadowing does this display? • They are leaving their old life behind. Things are going to change for the Man and the Boy. They don’t need the cart anymore, but now they will need something else.

  7. How do to the final pages of the chapter illicit a symbol of hope? • On pg 276 the Man says to the boy, “you have to carry the fire.” He goes on to say, “It’s inside you. It was always there. I can see it.” The fire being the hope of the world. The man realizes that he can’t be selfish and kill his son. He needs to have hope that his son will find someone and carry on.

  8. What two choices did the bearded man give to the boys (283)? • “You can stay here with your papa and die or you can go with me. If you stay you need to keep out of the road. I dont know how you made it this far. But you should go with me. You’ll be all right.”

  9. What future do you think the boy has with this new family? • The boy has a bright future with his new family. There is children for him to play with, a mother and hope for a new life.

  10. Why would the author include the story of the brook trout on page 286? • The brook trout is very sensitive to pollution. If their lake, river, etc. is polluted, they will die off immediately. They rarely survive longer than 4-5 years in the wild. • Perhaps McCarthy is trying to warn us to be careful with our earth. It could be a warning to future generations to respect their earth, because it is a very delicate and precious thing and once broken, it cannot be put back together again… it can only change into something new.

  11. Would you have concluded the novel the way the author has? • OPINION!
