  4. HISTORY • started in 2011 • Initial release : December 2012 • June 2013 : profile 0 of VP9 was finalized.

  5. WHY VP9? • The VP8 (WEBM) codec hasn't made the splash Google and many others had hoped it would • in competing with H.264, • HEVC High Efficiency Video Coding A SUCCESSOR for  H.264/MPEG-4 AVC

  6. YOUTUBE trouble • How big is it? • More than 1 billion monthly users; • • More than 4 billion video views per day; • • More than 6 billion hours of video watched per month; • • More than 72 hours of video uploaded each minute • • And 25 percent of consumption is with mobile devices.

  11. DETAILS • The VP9 standard defines two profiles: profile 0 andprofile 1 • profile 0  : Supports chromasubsampling 4:2:0 • profile 1  : support chromasubsampling, 4:4:4 +  alpha channelsupport +  depth channel support
