  3. Early Life • Born January 30, 1882 • Lived in Hyde Park, New York • Born very sickly • Only child of James and Sara Roosevelt • Attended Harvard University (BA) and Columbia Law School • He contracted Polio

  4. Hobbies • Stamp collecting • Bird-watching • Playing cards • Swimming

  5. Family • 5th cousin of Theodore Roosevelt • 6th cousin of Eleanor Roosevelt • There were two branches of Roosevelt’s the Oyster Bay (Rep.) and Hyde Park (Dem.) • FDR and Eleanor married on March 17, 1905 (St. Patrick's Day). They had one daughter and five sons (although one died)

  6. His children and theirs • James served in the Marines • John and Franklin Jr. served in the Navy • Elliott served in the Air Force • Anna help her father while he was in office • One of his Grandsons is an adviser to President Obama

  8. First days as President • He was elected president in November of 1932. • Hit with the The Great Depression • March of 1933 13,000,000 people were unemployed. • He created the New deal, in which there were two

  10. The Great Depression • It began with total collapse in the stock market in Oct.29, 1929.(known as Black Tuesday) • Countries around the world trade fall ½ to 2/3 • It ended on 1939 when WWII began in Europe

  11. Before we went into WWII • In 1940 FDR sent all available aid short of military help to the UK • He was already training solders • He told everyone he did not want to enter into WWII • He ask Congress many times from 1935-1937 to repeal the Neutral act

  12. Pearl Harbor • On Sunday Dec. 7, 1941 at 7:55 AM Hawaiian time Pearl Harbor was bombed by Japan • FDR was informed of this by the Secretary of the Navy at 1:47 PM east coast time

  13. WWII • We entered the war on Dec 7, 1941 • After Japan bombed us they said “It was like we awoke a sleeping giant” • Before we entered the UK was on the verge of losing • It included all of the world powers of the day

  14. WWII • There were 51 Allied Countries • There were 9 Axis Countries (Nazi) • The Head Commanding Officer for the Allies was General Dwight D Eisenhower • Head over England was Prime minister Winston Churchill

  15. WWII Nazi Germany • Adolf Hitler was the Führer and Chancelor of Nazi Germany • Hermann Goering was Chief of the Luftwaffe • Heinrich Himmler was the head of the SS and the Minister of the Interior • Field Marshal Wilhelm Keitel was the Nazi Chief of the High Command of the Armed Forces

Final Days of WWII • Japan left the war after we dropped the atomic bomb over them • Then we Attacked the Germans at Normandy on D-Day • Then we invaded Berlin and took over • Hitler killed him-self • At the end more than 60 million people had lost their lives and most of Europe and large parts of Asia lay in ruins.

  17. Finial Days of FDR’s life • On March 30, 1945, Roosevelt went to Warm Springs • On April 12 he said he had a headache and was taken to his room • He died later that day of a Cerebral Hemorrhage • He never saw WWII end

  18. FDR’s Legacy • He created the United Nations • The Social Security Act • His Monument in DC • He gave the office of the President the power it has today • He is ranked the 2nd greatest President ever

  19. Facts • He was the only President to serve four terms • The 22nd Amendment was put in place after he died

  24. Why I Choose this Topic • The Reason I Choose FDR as my topic was because he was such an influential President and he helped us through some of the worst times in history. He knew he was sick, and would soon die but he kept going instead of lying in bed until he died.
