  3. Grammar Time! Conjunctive Adverbs

  4. What is a conjunctive adverb? • Conjunctive adverbs are individual words that can relate complete sentences or paragraphs to each other. Example: Regardless, he never should have used her pen without asking.

Popular Conjunctive Adverbs Some examples of conjunctive adverbs are: • However- indicates a contrast to another phrase or sentence • Consequently- used to describe the result of an event or action • Moreover- information will be added from the previous sentence • Accordingly- In a way that is appropriate to the particular circumstances

  6. Where do conjunctive adverbs go?! • Conjunctive adverbs can be positioned at the beginning or in the middle of a sentence. Example: Tons of cabs flew past me; however, none of them stopped for me.

  8. First, I used to get yelled at for being home too much, now I get yelled at for being out too much. Then, I used to get yelled at for sleeping too much, now she asks if I ever get sleep anymore. Finally, I told her not to worry and that I would try to get more sleep.

  9. What punctuation goes around them? • If the conjunctive adverb is found at the beginning of the sentence, you put a comma after it. • If the conjunctive adverb is found in the middle of the sentence, you put a semicolon (;) before it and a comma after.

  16. Possessive Nouns Possessive- demanding someone or something’s total attention So how can a noun be possessive? • The possessive form of a noun is used to show ownership. • The possessive noun ALWAYS comes before what it owns or has.

  17. A noun is possessive if a phrase can be changed to say that an item or idea belongs to someone or something. For example: The new car belongs to Joe Joe’s car is new Now you try: The office of the dentist _______________

  18. How do I punctuate possessive nouns? • To show singular possession, place a apostrophe after the word and add an ‘s’. • A boy's hat • A woman's rights • An actress's movie • To show plural possession, make the noun plural first. Then add an apostrophe. • Women’s rights • two children's hats

  19. Add an apostrophe and an s to a singular noun, even if it ends in s. For example: the girl’s house / the bus’s driver • Add only an apostrophe to a plural noun ending in s. For example: the horses’ manes • Add an apostrophe and an s to irregular plural nouns that do not end in s. For example: the women’s hats
