  1. Sophomore Parent NightThe Portfolio process

  2. Rhode Island Diploma System Adopted by the RI Board of Regents in January of 2003 (updated 2008) • Move from Carnegie Units to a new system based on Proficiency using multiple measures • Old Carnegie unit is based on seat time units • SKHS requires 24 units

  3. Multiple Measures Requirements for Graduation • Complete courses • 24 credits • Portfolio • Comprehensive Course Assessments • State Tests – NECAP

  4. Portfolio Requirements for all students • 24 submissions –linked to 8 SLEs • 5 Formative reflections • One summative reflection • Exit Oral presentation

  5. Comprehensive Course Assessments (CCAs) • Students submit 8 proficient CCAs • 2 math • 2 ELA • 2 science • 2 social studies • Performance Based part of the final exam • Proficiency = 3 • Most students will fulfill this requirement by the end of junior year

NECAP TestsNew England Common Assessment Program Take Junior Year • October (Math & ELA) • May (Science) • Score ≥ 2 in both Math and Reading meets state proficiency • Remediation will be offered to students who do not score a 2 or better • Students will be given the opportunity to retake the exam as a senior

  7. Portfolio requirements (continued) Students complete an assortment of assignments that link to the school’s 8 Student Learning Expectations (SLEs). Four academic: A1, A2, A3 and A4 Two civic: C5, C6 Two social: S7 and S8

  8. Four Academic SLE’s SLE 1 • A1 Critical thinking and problem solving • 6 submissions SLE 2 • A2 Communicate effectively through reading, writing and speaking • 6 submissions and an exit presentation • List of 10 favorite books read during high school with reflective summary

  9. SLE 3 • A3 is technology literacy • students submit 4 examples of work demonstrating proficiency in 4 different software applications SLE 4 • A4 is fine arts proficiency • Students are required to demonstrate proficiency in at least one of the three fine arts • visual, music, or theatre (dance)

  10. Two civic • SLE 5 - C5 requires students to demonstrate an understanding of human rights and diversity • 1 submission from any course or • may choose a pre-approved self-generated project • SLE 6 - C6 requires students to demonstrate an understanding of political, environmental, social and economic issues affecting our world • 1 submission from any course or • may choose a pre-approved self-generated project • may use community service

Two Social • SLE 7 -S7 requires students to demonstrate an understanding of the connection between appropriate choices affecting their physical, social and emotional well-being • 1 submission from any course or • may choose a pre-approved self-generated project • SLE 8- S8 requires students to identify goals, set priorities and manage their academic progress • Create and manage their portfolio • Complete an ILP with school counselor • 2 recommendations

  12. How can students keep track? Portfolio Opportunities • Link courses to portfolio assignments • Review assignments uploaded to Richer Picture • SK 102 Checklist

Richer Picture • Richer Picture • Web based portfolio system • Allows access to student work at home • Students use the digital portfolio in SK 102 • Students will write 2 Formative Reflections • Teachers assign tasks for student submission • School counselors guide students as they complete their Individual Learning Plan using “Way to Go Rhode Island”

  14. How do students submit work to the Portfolio on Richer Picture? • Complete assignment in class • Example: persuasive essay, A2 • Teacher grades the work • Proficient work is uploaded to the Richer Picture Portfolio • Teachers assess work on Richer Picture – verifies submission

Student Support in the School • SK series classes - one per year (quarter class) • SK 101 introduction to life at SK and the portfolio process • SK 102, 103 and 104 – portfolio • In classes • From teachers who provide assignments linked to the school’s 8 SLE’s • In Advisory • From Advisors who review the portfolio process and requirements

  16. Provides support and instruction around new graduation requirements SK 102 (.25 course) • Pass/Fail • Mid- Quarter – 3/15/13 • 2 submissions SLE 1 and SLE 2 • 5 book summaries • Pass SK 102 • 7 Submissions • 5 Book summaries • 3 Formative Reflections

Communication between school and home • Parents can access a student’s portfolio on Richer Picture. • Information is sent out on the listserv • Information is on the school website • Parent nights (one per year) • Parent notification (junior year) if student has not met the CCA requirement at the end of 10th grade
