  1. Percent notation is used extensively in our everyday lives. Here are some examples: • 63% of the aluminum used in the United States is recycled. • 0.08% blood alcohol level is a standard used by most states at the legal limit for drunk driving. • 33% of all U.S. citizens say the day they dread most is the day they go to the dentist. Section 7.1

  2. Percent notation is often represented in pie charts to show how the parts of a quantity are related. To draw the pie chart think of a pie cut into 100 equally sized pieces. Then shade a wedge equal in size to 56 of the pieces to represent 56%. Shade in a wedge equal to 14 of the pieces to represent 14%, and so on. Section 7.1

  3. Do you see the shortcut for going from % to decimal????? Percent Notation That means I can take a percent and interpret it in the form of a fraction or decimal. 45% means 45 out of 100 or 45 per hundred which is the same as 0.45 Note that the decimal 0.45 is nothing more than the numerator of the fraction times 0.01 Rewrite each % as a fraction and a decimal. 73.6% 23% 67.34% 2.3% The notation n% means “n per hundred.” Section 7.1

  4. Decimals to Percents Write percent notation for 0.6 Write percent notation for 2.35 Do you see the shortcut for going from decimal to %????? Homework: Problems 15, 27 – copy the %, then give the answer. Explain (in words) how you got the answer. Problems 55, 57 - copy the number from the problem, give the answers in sentences. Problem 61 – make a list of the categories along with the %, then find the decimal (no work needs to be shown). Section 7.1
