  1. Digital Technologies in Science and Math Education

  2. User Simulations and DLOs KCVS/MAP Learn Alberta Stellarium/Celestia Audacity Gene Explorer Skill&Drill “DIME A Dozen!” Games Dissonance (HalfLife2 mod) Developer Image processing Photoshop/GIMP etc Animation FLASH, Blender, MAYA BioBlender Programming FLASH AS3, JAVA, VPython, PyGEO,Geometer’sSketchPad EXCEL Teacher as…

  3. A challenge… • A canon ball is in flight! Draw the force(s) acting on the ball: • On the way up • At the top • On the way down (ignore air resistance – it’s not important over so small a distance)

  4. Today’s Goals… • Look at a number of “User side” tools developed by The King’s Centre for Visualization in Science • Try to identify DLOs that will help you • Work collectively to identify teaching strategies to make effective use of these DLOs Very scary applet – do not open!

  5. Today’s Goals… • Look at a number of “Developer side” tools that you may want to explore • Photoshop/GIMP/Fireworks • From your own digital camera to producing illustrations • Blender/MAYA • FLASH/FlashVideo/QuickTIme • Your own digital movies (webcams, etc) • VPython & PyGeo

  6. Today’s Goals… • Major focus is, however, when to use and how to use DLOs • Exemplars… • Climate Change Education (Science 9,10, Biology/Chemistry/Physics • Modern Physics • Mathematical Modeling (Math 31) • Astronomy Education

  7. Why Would You Want to be a “Developer”? • Exemplar using VPython to model a bouncing ball • Math – how to model a continuously changing quantity (Math 31) • Physics 20 – how to model accelerated motion • What “hidden” agenda is being used here?

  8. Major Task • Identify a specific lesson topic that would lend itself to a DLO and explain to the rest of us how you intend on using it (we will do this only if time permits) – now do it! Prepare a lesson with strategic use of the DLO (This could be either individual, group of teacher demo)
