  1. Coalition of Student Leaders Response to Proposed Increases to UA Tuition for Academic Years 2011-12 and 2012-13

  2. History of Tuition Increases

  3. UA President’s Proposal

  4. The Cost To Students 1 Based on 15 Lower and 15 Upper division credits per year 2 Based on 4% APR

  5. Our Proposal, part 1 • No Revision for AY11-12 • Maintains trust with students and the tradition of setting tuition 2 years out • 2 year window keeps students secure and able to plan ahead • Changing the AY11-12 rates now will change the cost outlook for students less than one year out

  6. Our Proposal, part 2 • Increase 7% for AY12-13 • 7% fits with the trend since 2000 • Alaska’s CPI for the first half of 2010 was 2.5% • The 2010 Higher Education Price Index was 0.9% • 7% will generate considerable revenue while keeping costs within reasonable boundaries

  7. Comparison Under our proposal students would save $48 for each lower division class and $27 for each upper division class, or $375 for the year.

  8. Summary of Our Proposal • No revision of AY11-12 tuition • Do not abandon the tradition of trust with students • Increase no more than 7% for AY12-13 • Do not break the trend Students have absorbed over a decade of tuition increases. We understand the desire for continued increases. We want a reasonable solution that we can handle.

  9. BoR Meeting Result • No revision of AY11-12 tuition • Tradition of trust with students was maintained • AY12-13 increase delayed • Will be voted on during the December meeting.

  10. Post BoR Activity • UA Task Force on Tuition and Affordability • Composed of 11 members (one student) • Meeting weekly • Making a recommendation to President Gamble in November
