  1. Telling Others About Jesus Acts 17 Jay Brennan www.dexterfirstbaptist.org

  2. Background Second Missionary Journey • “distressed to see that the city was full of idols.” v.16 • Epicureans – denied God’s existence • Stoics – pantheists – God is in everything. • Paul knew the meaning of becoming all things to all men. I Corinthians 9:22

  3. 4 Traits in Paul’s sharing Jesus • Courteous • Contemporary • Courageous • Christ-Centered

  4. 1.Be Courteous • V.22 “Men of Athens! I see that in every way you are very religious…” • You cannot insult a person into the Kingdom of God. • 2:47 believers were… “praising God and enjoying the favor of all the people.”

  5. 2. Be Contemporary • Find common ground • When he was courteous, he broke down barriers; when he was contemporary, he built bridges to the heart of his audience. • verse 23: “For as I walked around and observed your objects of worship, I found even an altar with this inscription: TO AN UNKNOWN GOD…” • Got to know people – got to know their city • He looked for connectors - bridges

  6. 3. Be Courageous • verse 23: “Now what you worship as something unknown I am going to proclaim to you.” • He tactfully tells them they don’t know what they are worshipping…and he knows the God….they don’t know. • We find common ground by listening, reading, watching and by observing. • Prayer: “Lord, give me an open door to share Jesus today.” • When the door opens, be courageous and step in.

  7. 4. Be Christ-Centered • Jesus is the world’s only hope- We must speak about Jesus. v.24-31 • Tell them: -We were made in the image of God - We sinned – rebelled against God Jesus, who is God in the flesh, took our place on the cross and paid the penalty for our sins as proven by His resurrection. - Our sins are forgiven in Christ – As we trust in Him - With our sins forgiven our relationship with God is restored and we have the gift of eternal life …because all of ours sins have been paid for.

  8. People’s 3 Responses to our sharing Jesus • Contemptuous –v.32 • Curious – v.32 • Convinced – v.34

  9. Two Thoughts • How people respond to the gospel is God’s responsibility. • How I respond to God is my responsibility….keep the main thing the main thing….be sold out to Jesus!

  10. I.M.P.A.C.T. • “I” - Instructing in God’s Word –in our Heads, Hearts and Hands • “M” - Mobilizing for Ministry – Wait, Watch and Work • “P” - Praying with Faith – First Resort, Utter Dependence, Earnestly, With Others, With Confidence in God • “A” - Adoring God in Worship -We are to see God as awesome and worship Him as our God and Savior. • “C” - Caring Like Jesus – Deeds done for those in need. • “T” - Telling Others About Jesus – Courteous, Contemporary, Courageous, Christ-Centered

  11. Summary • Prayer • Care • Share • This is much more effective than “sitting on them.”
