Summary • Populations of living things interact with one another in communities. • In an ecosystem, a community of living things interacts with many different nonliving things. • When one thing changes in an ecosystem, other parts of the ecosystem are affected due to the complexity of relationships in an ecosystem.

  3. Ecosystem • All the living and nonliving things that interact with one another in a given area

  4. Community • A group of living things of different species found in an ecosystem

  5. Population • All the members of the same type of organism living in an ecosystem

  6. Adaptation • A trait or behavior that helps an organism survive

  7. Competition • A contest among populations for the food, water, shelter, and space they need to survive

  8. Conservation • The saving and protecting of natural resources

  9. Extinction • The death of all the organisms of a species

  10. Habitat • An area where an organism can find everything it needs to survive

  11. Pollution • A waste product that harms living things and damages an ecosystem

  12. Predator • An animal that kills and eats other animals

  13. Prey • An animal that is eaten by a predator

  14. Reclamation • The process of cleaning and restoring a damaged ecosystem
