Brief Summary of LTTE • The LTTE is a Tamil Nationalist organization seeking a homeland for the Tamil people of Sri Lanka. • Leader: Velupillai Prabhakaran • The mother land of Tamils, their nationalism, their right to self-rule should all be formally accepted. (Tamil Makkalin Thaayagam, desiyam, tannaatchi urimai yenbana angeegarikka pada vendum) • The legitimacy of the LTTE is on a steep decline. Political support from India was cut with the assassination of Rajiv Gandhi.

Social work is very limited. • The LTTE operates a parastatal organization in the Tamil areas replete with taxation, a judiciary, and security forces. • The LTTE has a separate banking system and manages funds in the areas it controls. • Tamil areas in Sri Lanka under LTTE hegemony. • The LTTE has no formal political party, but openly supports the “Illankai Tamil Arasu Kachchi” or Tamil National Alliance.

  4. Tsunami • December 26th, 2004 • LTTE initiated a ceasefire and began reconstruction • Attempted to merge with Sri Lankan government in order to petition for aid as a credible entity. • Creation of orphanages, building homes. • Overshadowed due to the recruitment of child soldiers

  5. Urimai kural • Stop the Genocide of the Tamils • The EU shouldn’t banish the LTTE • The Tamil Eelam Freedom Tigers should be accepted as the sole representatives of the Tamils • The invading army of Sri Lanka should be expelled from the Tamil Motherland
