Goals/Objective for Today  • Use a variety of teaching strategies and integrate new technology into today's lesson and illustrate how MS Power Point can be used in the business world. • In today's lesson we will re-teach what you have learned on creating a professional memo. • Introduce a new CORE curriculum requirement on business ethics. • Briefly discuss AIMS test taking strategies and go over this weeks vocabulary words. • Encourage students to be a “Risk Taker” and make the “Right Ethical Decision”. Remember: “RT=RED”

  5. Don’s New Job Don the Resume Wizard (Situation 1) • Don Sutton applied for a payroll clerk job with Search Services, a market research firm. To improve his chances in getting the job, he exaggerated his work experience on his resume. Based on this resume, Don was hired. After one year, he received above-average ratings during his annual performance review. Shortly thereafter, his boss met Don’s former supervisor and learned the truth. • Use the three-step checklist to help determine whether or not Don’s action demonstrated ethical behavior.

  6. The Three Step Checklist 1. Is the action illegal? No. Overstating qualifications is not illegal, but the employer could terminate your employment. 2. Does the action violate company or professional standards? No. Don was neither an employee of the company nor a member of any profession. 3. Who is affected, and how, by the action? Don: he obtained employment, but now he could be terminated. If retained, he could have difficulty being promoted. Other applicants: more highly qualified applicants lost an opportunity for employment. Search services: managers may lost trust in employees.

  7. Professional Memo Classwork: Use the Example Memo to type a professional memo to Mr. Nussberger from yourself regarding Situation 2 and 3. Use complete sentences to answer the following questions: • In situation 1 when Don exaggerated his experience on his resume, do you think he believed he would be caught? What effect did this have on his behavior? • If you were Don’s employer, would you fire him? Why or why not? • If you were another applicant for the job Don applied for, would you be tempted to do the same as Don? Why or why not?

  8. Who Owns My Time? Eva Torres Wing Commander Champion (Situation 2) Eva Torres is a receptionist for Media Technologies. After the company installed voice mail, Eva’s workload became lighter, so her supervisor assigned additional responsibilities, including some accounting tasks. Even with these assignments, Eva is not always busy. To fill the time, she plays computer games. • Is the action illegal? • Does the action violate company or professional standards? • Who is affected, and how, by the action?

  9. Is This Really a Business Expense? Kate’s New Phone (Situation 3) • Kate Silverman owns a computer consulting business. Each year she must report the amount of revenue and expenses involved in operating the firm. She must pay federal income tax on the amount by which revenues exceed expenses. Ms. Silverman often makes personal long-distance phone calls from her office. She charges these calls to the business account. • Is the action illegal? • Does the action violate company or professional standards? • Who is affected, and how, by the action?

AIMS Test Taking Strategies • Get plenty of sleep the night before. • Be sure to eat a high energy meal before the test. • Practice some problems the day before the test. • Review some of your AIMS vocabulary words. • Be sure to use the formula sheet. • Take your time on the test. • Always check your answers. • Never leave any question blank .

  12. Summary of Today's Lesson • Today’s lesson utilized new technology (MS Power Point and LCD Projector) to show students how this powerful technology can be used in the business world. • Our class also took another look at Professional Memo’s and how to create them using MS Word. • Introduced a new CORE curriculum requirement on business ethics and discussed the three-step checklist and RT=RED. • Discussed AIMS test taking strategies and went over this weeks Vocabulary/AIMS words
