  1. YEAR 1 PHONICS 2019 What you need to know

  2. The phonics screening check is taken individually by all children in Year 1 in England. It is designed to give teachers and parents information on how your child is progressing in phonics. It will help to identify whether your child needs additional support at this stage so that they do not fall behind in this vital early reading skill. What is the phonics screening check?

  3. The check takes place during the week commencing Monday 10th June 2019. • The Department for Education says that each phonics screening takes about four to nine minutes to complete. What do you need to know?

  4. The checks consist of 40 words and non-words that your child will be asked to read one-on-one with a teacher. • The Non-words (or nonsense words, or pseudo words) are a collection of letters that will follow phonics rules your child has been taught. Your child will need to read these with the correct sounds to show that they understand the phonics rules behind them. • Each non-word is presented with a picture of a monster so that your child understands these words are not real. What does it look like?

  5. For the last six years, the pass mark has been 32 out of 40. • The threshold mark is communicated to teachers at the end of June, after the test has taken place. • If your child’s score falls below the standard, they will be given a chance to retake in year two. How is it scored?

  6. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_UIv63W9StE Please watch this video which will hopefully answer any questions you may have.

  7. You can help your child prepare for their Phonics Screening Check by going over the phonics they’ve learned in Reception and Year 1. The flashcards that were sent home with your child should help. • Read new books and stories with them where they will be introduced to new words that they’ll have to sound out. • There are several phonics websites and apps you can use with your child, such as www.phonicsplay.co.uk How can you help prepare your child for the check?
