Research-Driven Clusters The European Commission’s Regions of Knowledge initiative aims to strengthen the research potential of European regions by encouraging and supporting the development of regional ‘research-driven clusters’ of universities, research centers, enterprises and regional authorities with a transnational dimension

3. Research-Driven Clusters The ideal configuration should provide a platform for a symbiotic relationshipbetween excellence in scientific researchandexcellence in economic growth,both supported by activeregional governments

Research-Driven Clusters • three types of partners, each of which has needs and can make a contributionto the project’s goal • Research infrastructures • Need to be supported and maintained as international leaders in their field • Should have a clear offerto industry, and should identify “hidden” offers • Regional government • Needs to ensure that adequate mechanisms are in place for technology transfer from RI’s to existing and new industry • Should promote and support research infrastructures and academic-industrial collaboration • Industry • Needs innovation • Can provide advice to identify the modalities that are most effective and useful

Research-Driven Clusters Rebuilding a virtuous circle between research and industry to enhance productivity and competitiveness 5 lines of action: Transfer of Technologies-coordination of the actors of the TT;-territorial economic intelligence systems;facilitate the relationship-TT-RS bodies and universities-creation of innovation clusters, involving businesses, universities, involved in the TT and PA Promotion of research projects-Industrial Research ⇒impact on employment and production-Basic research ⇒ with concrete effects-Basic research ⇒to promote excellence -Joint research projects, incentives for business

Promoting innovation and application of advancedservices-guidance to support SMEs-synergy with the transfer system-support the third mission of the universities by funding research contract and trainingapplication 4. Improve Absortive capacity of enterprises -University-PMI partnerships with joint projects-foster-articulated path of training, research and work among universities, companies and PA. 5. Promoting excellence in regional research-attraction of young researchers-international PhD schools in strategic areas-financing of projects in the same subject area-support the internationalization of the regional system of R&D

AMCER • EU R&D programmes have a significant impact on regional R&D systems • However, there precise effects at the regional level is far from clear • Available datasets are incomplete and contain distortions (e.g. HQ effects)‏ • Regions do not have access to all available data • Hence, difficult to design regional RDI strategies that take (past, present & future) acquisition of EU R&D programmes into account

8. AMCER The AMCER project will develop more accurate methodologies and analytical content on both impact and coordination of Eu R&D policies. For this, it will deepen existing studies, including Espon ones, and solid preliminary expertise developed by participating Regions. Its results will be of direct interest for all Regions, as well as for National authorities and European institutions.

11. AMCER The stakeholders behind this project intend to use the project results in defining strategic options for future R&D policies. They in particular intend to: Improve regional databases on the R&D systems Prepare of the strategic reference frameworks and operational programmes under the next programming period (2014-2020) Formulate recommendations to the development of regionalized indicators on the results and impact of EU R&D policies

Summer Session Programme 2011 Summer Session Programme The Summer Session Programme (SSP) will be an interdisciplinary and international “summer school” of higher education, professional development, and research, preparing individuals to respond to the current needs and the increasing and evolving demands of the specific sectors and the applications regarding the EPISODEProject related disciplines. The SSP cover both technical and non-technical disciplines and skills (scientific, technical, legal, commercial, social, etc.) relevant to Episodeproject-related fields and activities. They are delivered by permanent and part-time faculty and by lecturers drawn from the academic, government, and industry sectors from the regional partners

Summer Session Programme 2011 • SSP participants: • - Come to the university/industries/local authorities with their specialist backgrounds and progressively broaden their perspective through increased knowledge in the other relevant fields connected with the Episode project. • Gain an appreciation of the global perspective and of the challenges presented by the international character of the activities and their applications, in addition to an understanding of the impact of different cultural and disciplinary backgrounds in responding to these challenges. • - Acquire privileged contacts within a network, which includes leading figures from Episodeproject-related industries, government and international organizations, and universities around Europe.

Summer Session Programme 2011 • SSP description: • The SSP is an intensive 2-weeks program providing post-graduate students and professionals from the regions participating to the project with a unique educational/professional experience on the European project-related activities. The program facilitates the acquisition of knowledge, skills, and professional contacts in an interdisciplinary, intercultural, and international setting. In order to offer an opportunity to different host sites, the program will be held annually in a different educational or research institution of the regions partners. • The SSP offers an ideal forum for students/professionals people and faculty alike to participate in a network of international leaders in the project related disciplines research and development, and to forge new professional relationships
