How was the idea of Democracy born? • Concept of Democracy born in Greece • C.800-650 BC Rule by aristocrats= Rich=Oligarchy= rule by the few- • C.650-500BC Rule by Tyrants : “Draco”=harsh law “draconian” • Solon’s reforms: cancel debts, system of government, more power to middle class • Democracy introduced by Cleisthenes 508 BC
