  2. Facts about Actinides • Rare Earth metals • Named after actinium, the first element in the group • Consists of fifteen elements, numbers 89-103 • All elements in this family are radioactive, • Some aren't found in nature,all higher atomic numbered elements are created in labs

Cont. facts about actinides • The elements higher than 92 are called transuranium elements. • Because of the arrangement of their orbital electrons, they are chemically similar to one another and also to the lanthanides. • Thorium, protactinium, uranium, and very small amounts of actinium and plutonium are found in nature. The other actinides, along with most plutonium, are produced artificially in nuclear reactors and particle accelerators.

  7. Thorium (Th) • was discovered by Berzelius in 1828 • Named after the Norse god of thunder, Thor • is a gray, radioactive metal which is fairly abundant in the Earth's crust

  8. Plutonium (Pu) • Discovered by Seaborg in 1941 • Named after the planet Pluto • piece of plutonium about the size of a softball would feel hot to the touch because of the high level of alpha particle radiation given off.

  11. Uranium (U) • Named after the planet Uranus • discovered in 1789 by Klaproth • pure metal is heavy, silver, and lustrous • tarnishes slowly in air and reacts with boiling water

  12. Protactinium (Pa) • Discovered in 1913 by Fajans and Göhring • is named from the Greek proto + actinium (parent of actinium) • silvery-white metal, extrememly rare, very radioactive and highly poisonous

  13. Einsteinium (Es) • a metallic synthetic element • Radioactive • Named after Albert Einstein
