    2. Athletic Policy We are excited about your child becoming a member of our Athletic program. Athletics provides valuable life-long lessons such as, teamwork, sportsmanship, hard work, commitment, & self-confidence. This will help develop responsible students and productive citizens. We believe in these values and are committed to help each athlete develop them here at Claughton. We also will work with our athletes to prepare them for competition at Westfield & Dekaney High Schools.

    3. Athletic Policy Cont. We are all members of Claughton Middle School. It is important to display excellent sportsmanship toward coaches, teammates, officials, and opponents at all times. This applies to parents, players, and coaches.

    4. Athletic Policy Cont. All 7th grade football practices will take place in the mornings beginning at 7:00 am and all players should be here by 6:30 am in order to be ready for practice. Indoor activities will take place on bad weather days. All 8th grade football practices will take place during the 8th grade athletic period and end at 6:00 with activity buses available to take our athletes home. We will have a mandatory study hall on Wednesdays if no game is scheduled. Activity buses leave at 5:30 on Wednesdays.

    5. Athletic Policy Cont. We expect all players to be on time and attend all practices. We are asking parents to call or e-mail the appropriate coach if a player misses practice or if you know a practice will be missed. Please read attached discipline consequences.

    6. Athletic Policy Cont. We will give you approximate times that games will end. Parents please have transportation arranged to have your child picked up after games.

    7. Athletic Policy Cont. We expect and demand our athletes to work as hard in the classroom as they do on the field. We will monitor all athletes grades and conduct with their teachers and hold them accountable for failing to keep up with their school work and inappropriate behavior. Extra physical activity, reduced playing time, or game suspensions are all possible consequences for unacceptable behavior.

    8. Athletic Policy Cont. If an athlete is in our extension center, they are not allowed to practice or play until their time is completed. We will work hard to help our athletes excel academically. See our attached discipline point sheet.

    9. Athletic Policy Cont. No Pass, No Play is a state law that all public schools abide by regarding academic eligibility. If a student fails (below a 70) one or more classes during a 6-week grading period, they become ineligible to compete in games until all classes are passing during the midterm of the next 6-week grading period. See attached eligibility calendar. Attendance at practice is required during this period of ineligibility.

    10. Athletic Policy Cont. Athletes will be graded during the Athletic period based on participation. Athletes will take part in an off-season strength and conditioning program after football season is over. Basketball players will do this as well.

    11. Athletic Policy Cont. All players will be issued equipment that they will be responsible for during the season. Each player will be responsible for reimbursing Spring ISD for any lost equipment. Broken equipment will be repaired or replaced by the coaches.

    12. Athletic Policy Cont. Nutrition is extremely important for all, especially athletes. We recommend that athletes (7th grade football players) eat breakfast before school and practice or bring something to eat after practice before athletes are dismissed to class. It is extremely important for football players to develop the habit of drinking water through out the school day and at home. If players wait until practice time, this is too late.

    13. Athletic Policy Cont. This will go a long way to help avoid any problems with dehydration that may occur. Carbonated and caffeinated drinks can cause an athlete to become dehydrated much quicker. Sodas and drinks such as this should be avoided. Water is the best drink available. We will take precautions by giving frequent water breaks and closely monitoring our players during practice and games.

    14. Athletic Policy Cont. We would appreciate any concerns that parents have not be addressed during or after practice or games. We are responsible for a large number of kids during this time. Please set up an appointment with the appropriate coach and we will be happy to speak with you. Remember, we are after the same thing, what is best for your child. We can be contacted through e-mail or phone us at 832-764-7950 ext. 1025 or 832-764-7987.
