Icebreaker • “Beach Ball Buzz” • Game leader will throw the game ball to a committee member. • Member who catches the ball will read and answer the question that is located under their right thumb. • If their right thumb does not land on a question, committee member will throw ball back to leader and try again.

4. How to Be A Leader 5 Takeaways from National Student Leadership Summit • Don’t be afraid to go up and talk to someone you don’t know and include them. Chances are that they’ll appreciate it. • Be open minded and inclusive not only to physical differences, but also opinion • Be optimistic in your body language, diction, and tone, because you set the tone as a leader • Be extremely aware of how others perceive you, especially on social media • Stop thinking of what you lack or can’t do, and focus on your positive attributes. Those who follow you will notice the difference

6. What is fhsaa? • We are the governing body for interscholastic athletics in the state of Florida. We are a not-for-profit corporation that, while not appointed by the Florida Legislature, cooperates with the Legislature and the Florida Department of Education in governing interscholastic athletics.

7. What is Fhsaa? FHSAA Bylaw 1.5 Fundamental Belief Interscholastic athletic programs play a vital role in the education of students who participate in them. Through their participation in interscholastic athletics, students are provided character-building opportunities to demonstrate Honesty Integrity Respect Caring Cooperation Trustworthiness Leadership Tolerance Personal responsibility FHSAA Bylaw 1.2 • Purpose • Provides leadership for the development, supervision and promotion of interscholastic athletic programs sponsored by its member schools. • Participation in these programs enriches the educational experience of qualified student-athletes by providing them with opportunities to compete in an equitable, sportsmanlike and wholesome manner.

What is Fhsaa? • Principles • Educational nature of interscholastic athletics—you are students first, athletes second • Participation is a privilege, not a right • Sportsmanship and ethical conduct must be taught and promoted • Abide by gender equity laws • Member school administrations are responsible for, and therefore must control, all persons representing their school in interscholastic competition (this means faculty, student-athletes, parents, spectators, and anyone else supporting the athletic interests of their school) • Member schools must comply with FHSAA rules • We promote diversity and demand respect for and sensitivity to the dignity of every person—no discrimination. • Our rules promote competitive equity. • Our association will adopt and enforce eligibility rules.

11. SAAC Mission Statement “We work to represent the best interests of all student-athletes by presenting their concerns to the FHSAA, thereby developing initiatives for future improvement. Our goal is to promote the advancement of sportsmanship and integrity by fostering an ethical, safe, competitive environment on and off the field.”

Sunshine State Spirit Showdown Overview • Videos must be between 90 seconds and 3 minutes • Must also include at least 30 seconds of discussion about why school should be winner • Cheers must be positive • Sportsmanship is the overall goal for this program • Submissions are uploaded to FHSAA website by established deadline and YouTube playlist is created with all of the submissions • Fans will be encouraged to watch all videos and vote on favorites using Survey Monkey link on social media sites

Sunshine State Spirit Showdown Choosing a Winner • Fans will be encouraged to watch all videos and vote for favorite using Survey Monkey link on social media sites • Fan votes will be divided by school population to keep competition fair amongst large schools and small schools • SAAC makes final decision on winner which will be determined based on the following criteria: • Positive sportsmanship • Student body and Community participation • School spirit • Originality of cheers • Organization of the group/student body • Overall fun • Social media votes

16. Sunshine State Spirit Showdown Timeline • October • October 17: Introduce Program to FHSAA Member Schools through email blast and social media • Explain rules, criteria for videos, submission requirements • Member schools will be able to film student cheering section during the Fall & Winter Sports Season • November • Reminders sent to FHSAA Member Schools through social media • Explain rules, criteria for videos, submission requirements • December • Reminders sent to FHSAA Member Schools through social media • Explain rules, criteria for videos, submission requirements • January • Reminders sent to FHSAA Member Schools through social media • Explain rules, criteria for videos, submission requirements • February • February 1: Deadline for member schools to submit videos • February 6: Videos that meet the criteria will be uploaded to FHSAA YouTube using the playlist feature. FHSAA YouTube Playlist will be placed FHSAA website and social media and promoted through FHSAA website headlines and social media. Fans will be encouraged to watch all videos and vote on favorites using Survey Monkey link on social media sites • March • March 9: Fan voting ends. Poll will be taken off the FHSAA social media sitesat 5 pm. • March 10: Second SAAC Meeting of the Year • SAAC will watch videos from all member schools that have submitted, critique using established guidelines and determine winner.

Individual Goals • What are your individual goals for the 2016-2017 school year? • Form a Student Leadership Group at your school • Work together with fellow leadership members to organize a volunteer effort • Report back to SAAC with results of volunteer efforts and achievements of your local school’s leadership group

20. Student Volunteer Program • Opportunity for SAAC members work a state championship through assisting FHSAA staff members, acting as a media aid, helping with press conferences and awards ceremonies.
