  3. Current period has seen incredible change.

  4. Over 50 years since Brown vs. Board of Education.

  5. Brown vs. Board also affected higher education.

  6. Approximately 1-2% of African American students enrolled in predominantly white institutions at the start of the Civil Rights movement.

  7. PWI’s were overwhelmingly white and largely male.

  8. Institutions were also technology light.

  9. Diversity became an asset, rather than a liability.

  10. Forward looking institutions embraced diversity and recognized thecritical value of technology.

  11. Universities invested in implementing technology across the institution-diversity investments were much more limited.

  12. Enrollments of students of color have increased substantially.

  13. A majority of those students are in 2 year, not 4-year institutions.

  14. The representation of faculty of color has increased only modestly.

  15. Institutions of higher education have been historically resistant to change.

  16. Technology changes are embraced as improvements to the learningenvironment.

  17. Diversity changes encounter passive resistance, and are ofteninterpreted as lessening the academic quality of the institution.

  18. The stated interest in diversity is not reflected in institutionalactions or investments.

  19. Diversity at the student level is not enough - faculty, administration and curriculum must also be diverse.

  20. Demographic changes and global competitiveness are compelling reasons to achieve greater diversity.

  21. With technological change happening all around us, and at an ever-accelerating pace,

  22. How do we infuse the critical importance of diversity at all levels into the hands and heads of those who represent the majority populationsin our institutions of higher learning?
