  2. Zeus was known to the Greeks as a great God who rewarded the good and punished the bad. He is famous for his lightning bolt which he actually received from the giants with one eye also known as the Cyclops’, who helped Zeus in his war against his father.

  3. The lightning bolt was a feature of Zeus and helped him to control the sky and weather. He used the lightning bolt in wars and in some cases to stop fighting. Zeus was also the God of law, order and fate.

  4. Zeus was the son of the great god Cronus and the goddess Rhea. Cronus was fearful that his children would over power him and take over Mount Olympus and rule the Olympians. Cronus’ solution was to swallow his children whole so that they couldn’t overpower him when they grew up. Rhea then thought to hide Zeus on an island and to trick Cronus; she wrapped a stone in baby clothes so Cronus swallowed the stone instead of Zeus.

  5. When Zeus grew up he returned to his mother and father in disguise and tricked Cronus into drinking something that forced him to throw up all the children he had swallowed. So then Zeus gathered up his two brothers and three sisters and fought against their father. Zeus won the war and took his father’s place as leader of mount Olympus.

  6. Zeus later married his sister Hera and had two children. But Zeus had many other children because of affairs. He had so many children that he could not even name all of them. Zeus had the power to transform into anything he wanted including animals and mortals; he used this to his advantage to seduce mortal women. Therefore, historian s believes that Zeus had at least eight children but the exact number is unknown.

  7. The Odyssey is a story of Odysseus, the King of Ithaca, on his journey home. Calypso, a Goddess, had kept Odysseus captive for seven years, and Zeus, the God of all Gods, ordered Hermes to instruct Calypso to let Odysseus go.

  9. At the beginning of the book, Zeus is shown sitting on a throne in the Heavens. This demonstrates Zeus’ great power amongst the Gods.

  10. Thinking Odysseus wasdead, many suitors came for his wife. Odysseus and his son, Telemachus, killed the suitors. Later in the book, when Odysseus was fighting against the fathers of the suitors he had killed, Zeus’ children came to stop the fighting and Zeus himself sent down lightning bolts from the Heavens.

  11. This shows that Zeus’ character was one of peace and harmony.
