Impairment vs. Disability vs. Handicap • Impairment: a medical condition that affects one’s normal abilities (i.e.understand speech). • Disability: actual or presumed reduction in the ability to remain employed at full wages. Degree of disability determines compensation paid. • Handicap: a less exact term, often used to imply a person’s ability to understand speech under everyday circumstances considering the hearing loss in BOTH ears.

  3. Results…. • Stigma by peers (real and/or perceived) • Restricted social participation • Reduced autonomy • Negative self-image • Diminished quality of life
