ACE Review • SB 982 signed into law 2005 • Established new curricular requirements • College prep for all beginning 2006-07 • All students now take these courses unless they opt out • Established EOI tests for graduation • Required parents to sign permit for students to take core curriculum rather than College Prep curriculum • 2008-2009: 5485 (48,866) for 11.22%

  3. SB 1792 • Signed June 2006 • Implements ACE testing beginning 2009-10 • Established ACE Steering Committee • Renamed curriculum College Prep/Work Ready • Created new EOI tests • Established tests required for graduation • Allows for alternate tests to be adopted

  4. 4 units English 3 units Math 3 units Lab Science 3 units History & Citizenship 2 units Foreign Language or Computer Technology 1 additional unit 1 unit arts or speech All courses must be approved for college admission Students must have three math courses within 9th -12 grade College Prep/Work Ready

  5. Standard Diploma Requires mastery in the state academic content standards for: • Algebra I • English II • And two of the following five: • Algebra II • Biology I • English III • Geometry • United States History

  6. Tests Required for Graduation in 2011-12 • Algebra I and English II plus 2 more tests of student choice • Must be passed at satisfactory or above • Tests required to be delivered on-line • 3 testing opportunities each year

Rules Approved by SDE • Provides documentation for process of student assessment • Steps to follow for those students who do not score satisfactory or proficient scores on EOIs • Remediation • Retaking EOI • Alternative Assessments • End of Course Projects • Provides language for student exceptions and exemptions • Provides language for monitoring and cumulative record process Subchapter 13.   8. SBE Approved Alternative Assessments • Mathematics (Algebra I, Algebra II, and Geometry) • Science (Biology I) • History and Social Science (US History) • English (English II and English III) (List of Alternative Assessments provided in handouts.)

ACE and CTE • Access Issues for CTE • Importance of Planning Increased • Develop Plan of Study • Involve parents in planning • Parents must sign form for curriculum option • Review annually • Connect plan with career goals • Implement Teachers As Advisors to assist • Remediation Opportunities • Data and Accountability

  10. Legislative Implications • SB 497 allows for technical certifications to be added to High School Diploma • SB 867 allows for technology centers to provide remediation on any subject • SB 1168 creates a Legislative Study Committee for ACE • SB 222 creates an Advisory Group for Accountability

Senate Bill 497 “Beginning with students who enter the 9th grade in 2008-2009 school year, school districts shall report the student’s performance levels of satisfactory and above on the end of instruction tests and any business and industry-recognized endorsements attained on the high school transcript.” (Handout)

Senate Bill 867 “Technology center school shall be authorized to provide intervention and remediation in Algebra I, Algebra II, Geometry, English II, English III, United States History and Biology I to students enrolled in technology center schools, with the approval of the independent school district board.” (Handout)

CTE Scheduling Options • Mathematics • Tech centers may offer above Alg I to 11th and 12th graders • May offer to 10th grade if tech center offers a SBE approved program of focused career study • Pre-Engineering • Biomedical Sciences • Biotechnology • Construction (May remediate for all mathematics courses with EOI)

Scheduling Options for CTE • Laboratory Science • CTE courses maybe certified as lab science by local high school • Ag Ed/High school • Certain Health courses/Tech Center • Must meet highly qualified teacher and requirements for college admission • Meet process standards for lab science • Above Biology I if taught at tech center • Science courses should relate to student’s Program of Study • Physics, Chemistry, Anatomy and Physiology, Microbiology, AP Biology, AP Chemistry, AP Environmental, AP Physics • Allows tech centers to remediate Biology I for EOI

Scheduling Options for CTE • Foreign Language or Computer Technology-2 units • approved for college admission requirements, whether taught at a high school or a technology center school, including computer programming, hardware, and business computer applications, such as word processing, databases, spreadsheets, and graphics, excluding keyboarding or typing courses • OHLAP approval applies • List of OHLAP approved courses in handouts

  16. Scheduling Options for CTE • 1 additional unit from core or CTE approved for college admission • OHLAP approval has provided foundation for this option • Statewide approval option rather than individual site by site (Handout)

  17. E-transcripts Service provided as part of the OSRHE’s OKcollegestart.org student portal - Allows transcripts to be transferred from HS to Technology Centers and colleges electronically (no paper!)

Benefits for High Schools • Available free of charge • Send transcripts securely and accurately • Save time and demands on staff • Track when transcripts are sent to TC or post-secondary institutions • Requires no additional equipment and no costly photocopying and mailing • Easy to implement and use

Benefits for Technology Centers • Save time for TC counselors since all Tech Centers ask for a transcript for enrollment purposes (17,080 last year/2009 Annual Report) • With higher graduation requirements, counselors at TC can use transcript or an extra “credit check” to make sure the student is on track to graduate • Technology Centers would have EOI, ACT, etc., tests scores much sooner because they are now being posted to transcripts • Business and industry recognized endorsements are now being added to transcripts (validates training received to company or college) • Saves environment (paperless) • No lost transcripts • Private and secure • Reliable and timely receipt of transcripts • Easy to implement and use

  20. Currently… • 264 high schools signed up (535 total HS) • 77 colleges/universities and technology centers + NCAA Eligibility Center + OKPromise signed up • 2259 e-transcripts sent to Tech Centers in 2010 The number of high schools participating has greatly increased since technology center counselors begin communicating and working with high school counselors!
