  1. Harmonizing a Melody Chorale Style Rules: 1. Use a Half Cadence ( I – V, IV – V, or ii – V) or an Authentic Cadence (V – I) for the final two notes of each phrase. 2. Use mostly circle progressions. 3. Harmonize one chord per melody quarter note. Use repeated chords sparingly. 4. Use inversions and NHT to make a smooth bass line.

  3. Let’s look at the rules. Cadences - No cadence in No. 1, Authentic cadence in 1 and 2.

  7. Let’s look at the rules. Weak Progressions - 1 has three descending 2nd progressions and one ascending 3rd progressions. The other two have no weak progressions.

  9. Harmonic Rhythm General Rules: 1. Chords usually change on the first beat of a measure, to establish pulse or meter. 2. In 4/4 and 6/8 there is often a chord change in the middle of the measure. 3. In 3/4, if there is a chord change it is usually on the third beat. 4. A skip between two melody notes usually indicates that the melody notes are members of the same chord.
