Levels of Dependency • Definitions • Tolerance – A condition in which the body becomes used to the effect of a medicine or drug. • Physical Dependence - The level of substance abuse at which severe physiologic symptoms will occur if use of the substance is suddenly terminated • Psychological Dependence- a dependency of the mind, and leads to psychological withdrawal symptoms if use of the substance is suddenly terminated • Addiction – A physiological or psychological dependence on a substance. • Withdrawal- The process that occurs when a person stops using a substance upon which he or she has a physiological or psychological dependence.

  3. Drug Experimentation • Why do you think people experiment with drugs? • Why do you think that some young people go from experimentation and social use to more serious drug dependency, which eventually results in addiction, or a physiological dependence on a given drug?
