TTSG reports 2005 • Thames Tideway Strategic Study started 2001 to “protect the Thames Tideway from adverse effects of wastewater discharges” • Four possible strategies considered • Eight options worked up based on strategy 3 • Preferred solution: large diameter storage and transfer tunnel, delivered within 15 years • Smaller-scale measures with earlier implementation considered in supplementary report

Ofwat/JB review 2006 • Commissioned to • identify assumptions and gaps in TTSG report • consider partial solutions • Potential solutions grouped under “Strategy 5”: integrated stormwater management • Proposed Option X: • 9km tunnel from Hammersmith to Heathwall PS • Screening plants at Heathwall PS and Earl PS • Primary treatment facilities at Abbey Mills PS • In-river skimmers

  4. TTAG/TW: Options development 2006 • July 2006: Defra asked TW to develop and assess two options by year-end • Option 1: one 30km+ tunnel under Thames and treatment in E London • Option 2: two shorter tunnels in W and E London • Three iterations of each option tested • Option 1c selected as preferred option • One tunnel from Hammersmith to Beckton and one from Abbey Mills to Beckton

RIA 2007 to pre-consultation 2010 • Defra RIA (March 2007) – IPR of development of phased single tunnel approach • TW pursued development of this option • Cut in CSOs served – 34 to 21 • local solutions for other 13 CSOs • Three route variants considered • River Thames route • Rotherhithe route • Abbey Mills route (preferred)

TW: Consultations 2009-11 • Site selection consultation 2009 • local authorities and other stakeholders • Phase one consultation Sep 10 – Jan 11 • scheme approval and planning context • TW compliance with legislation and guidance • publication range and suitability • Phase two consultation to begin Sep 11 • TW aim to submit planning app summer 12
