  1. Bell Ringer # 1 – 5/13/09 The Curious Case of Benjamin Button is an historical fiction film. It takes place in New Orleans, LA from 1919-2003. Describe historical context of the film. How would life be different if someone endured the same disease as Benjamin Button?

  2. Wisconsin Idea • The Wisconsin Idea was a 1900 reform program started by WI Governor Robert La Follette. • Direct elections • Taxes on railroads & utilities • Natural resource protection • The W.I. became a model for other states

  3. Theodore Roosevelt becomes President • “Teddy” Roosevelt was VP in 1900 when McKinley became President • In 1901, McKinley was shot by an unemployed laborer. Roosevelt took office at age 42. • Roosevelt renamed the Executive Mansion the “White House”

  4. President William McKinley was killed by Leon Czolgosz (pronounced “cholgosh”),at the Pan-American Expo in Buffalo.

  5. McKinley fell backward, a pool of blood forming on his chest. Secret service agents and police immediately disarmed the assassin and began to inflict a near fatal beating. McKinley was still conscious and pleaded that the assault on Czolgosz stop. The President also asked that care be taken when informing his chronically ill wife of the event. McKinley was taken to a local hospital where he underwent surgery for his gunshot wounds. It at first appeared that he would recover, but complications set in and the president died on September 14, 1901. A large crowd had assembled to shake hands with the President and exchange words. Czolgosz stood near the front of the line with his right hand wrapped in a handkerchief to make it appear as if he were protecting an injured hand from infection. When his turn came, Czolgosz extended his left hand toward the President while firing two rapid shots from a .32 caliber revolver concealed behind the covering. Czolgosz was found guilty of murder and was electrocuted in the state prison at Auburn, New York on October 29.

  6. National Park Service • Roosevelt recognized that natural resources are limited. He set aside 150 million acres of land as forest reserves! • The National Park Service was established in 1916 to supervise parks and monuments.

  7. New Nationalism Program • Looking for re-election, Roosevelt pushed his progressive plan known as “New Nationalism”. • It’s goals were to pass laws protecting workers, public health and regulating business.
