  1. Spotlight on the Solar System An Overview of Outreach and Dissemination Activities by the Europlanet Research Infrastructure Anita Heward

  2. Europlanet Research Infrastructure (RI) • Four year project funded by the European Commission under FP7 (expansion from FP6 project 2005-2008) • 27 participant institutes in 15 European countries • 74 associate institutions in 25 countries worldwide (inc Brazil, Japan & USA) • Linking more than 100 laboratories carrying out planetary research

  3. Europlanet Outreach Goals • Support the outreach community in existing outreach work and developing new, innovative projects to engage European citizens with planetary science • Europeanise planetary sciencenewsstories in the media (it’s not just NASA!) • Change the culture of the planetary science community towards outreach activities

  4. Diversity of approaches required across multiple countries with different cultures and languages. • All goals underpinned by network of outreach nodes across Europe building links between the planetary science community, the media and outreach providers using local contacts and local knowledge (See presentation by Yaël Nazé, Thursday)

  5. Europlanet Outreach Budget • Outreach/dissemination budget in order of €500 000 (~8% of total Europlanet RI budget) over 4 years. • Staffing ~1FTE, node travel costs, training workshops, funding scheme and prize.

  6. Europlanet Outreach Core Team

  7. Changing the culture towards outreach • European Space Policy underlines the value of space exploration for inspiring young Europeans to choose a career in science and technology • Outreach (particularly in economic hard times) is often seen as a low priority in the science community • “Doing outreach activities won’t help me in my career” • “My supervisor complains that I’m spending too much time on outreach” • Royal Society survey in 2006 – only 50% of scientists interviewed described their department as supportive of public engagement activities.

  8. Changing the culture towards outreach • Europlanet Prize for Excellence in Public Communication in Planetary Science (annual award of € 4K) • Increasing visibility of outreach through: • National Node network • Inviting Prize winners to share best practice at the European Planetary Science Congress (EPSC) • Outreach oral and poster sessions at EPSC, scheduled as part of the main programme rather than add-ons. • Public events at EPSC

  9. Outreach Innovation Laboratory • Organise, promote and foster outreach activities in Europlanet member countries via the National Node Network (see talk by Yaël Nazé) • IYA activities e.g. Galilean Nights Astrophotography competition, Cassini Scientist for a Day competition • Maximise financial resources available for funding outreach activities by holding a competitive application process each year.

  10. Funding Scheme • Provide seed funding of 5K-15K Euros for outreach projects • Judging criteria: relevance to planetary science, innovation, legacy, potential for Europe-wide participation • First funding scheme (and outreach prize) launched in September 2009. Submissions will be judged on 22nd March 2010 • Scheme advertised through Nodes, through Europlanet institutions list, through CAP journal

  11. Europlanet Media Centre • Services for the media • Services for scientists • Services for stakeholders

  12. Services for the Media • E-mail list for press releases on European planetary science (Europlanet news, forwarded releases from institutions) • Local news on national pages of Europlanet outreach website • Database of media friendly scientists across Europe who can give local/ national perspective on stories. • Information on national involvement in missions and other planetary research • Background information on planetary science

  13. Services for Scientists • Communication skills workshops: Full workshop in Summer 2010 and 2012; short workshops at European Planetary Science Congress (EPSC). • Training provided by ESConeT) • Support and distribution service for press releases

  14. Services for Stakeholders • Briefings and information notes for Members of European Parliament on planetary science activities within their constituency and the contribution from the planetary community to European science, jobs and industry • Stakeholder sessions at European Planetary Science Congress (EPSC)

  15. Conclusions • Europlanet’s strategy is to build outreach infrastructure that will last beyond the lifetime of the FP7 project: • Node network • Links between planetary science community & media • Culture of outreach in Europlanet institutions • Outreach sessions at EPSC • www.europlanet-eu.org
