  3. About Me • I have been in 6th grade for 25 years! • Married - two sons, one grandchild • Love to travel • Involved with the Arizona Geographic Alliance • Also like to hike, camp read historical fiction and go to the movies.

  4. Arizona Social Studies Curriculum • Five strands in each grade level: • World History • U.S. History • Civics/Government • Geography • Economics

  5. Sixth GradeEmphasizes World history from its earliest cultures through the Enlightenment Early Civilizations: • Mesopotamia • Egypt • India • China • Greece • Rome

  6. Sixth GradeEmphasizes World history from its earliest cultures through the Enlightenment Early Civilizations in the Americas: • Hohokam • Hopewell • Mayans • Aztecs • Incans

  7. Sixth GradeEmphasizes World history from its earliest cultures through the Enlightenment World in Transition: • Middle Ages • Renaissance • Reformation

  10. Common Core • Reading informational text and discussing key vocabulary words and intended meaning of unfamiliar words. • Restating and summarizing main idea and point of view of informational text. • Writing argumentative responses to informational text. • Writing a formal business letter.

  13. Grading Policy • Grading • A------100%-90% • B------- 89%-80% • C------- 79%-70% • D------ 69%-60% • F------- Below 60%

  14. Grading Policy • My Grades are weighted as the following: • Assessments ( Tests, Projects, Quizzes)------80% • Daily work and Homework ----- 20%

  15. Homework and class work: • Full credit can be earned for work submitted on time. • Any work submitted after one day will receive half credit. • Any work two or more days late will receive a zero.

  16. Projects: • Late projects are marked down 10% each day for three days. After three days it’s a zero. • Tests ---Study guides and notes are provided for tests. In most cases the study guide is given a the beginning of the week. Books are not sent home in this class.

  19. Team Rules • Raise your hand before speaking • Be in your seat when the bell rings • Keep your hands and feet to yourself • Do not throw objects in the classroom • Demonstrate respect for everyone • Voices off when teacher is talking

  20. Printer Problems If your child is unable to print their homework, etc., they can always save it to a jump drive or email it to us and we will print it at school.

ABSENCES • The student is responsible for missing assignments and turning them in the required amount of time.  • check website • check planner • ask me • ask a “buddy” student • Students are expected to complete all assignments and tests missed during an absence.  • For every excused absence, the student is given TWO days to complete the missing work.

Changes You May See In Your Child This Year • Emotional ups and downs • Physical changes • Social strains • Changes that will not only affect them but you as well • Go from this sweet lovable child to someone you barely recognize at times • Want to become more independent • May not want to share what’s going on in their lives

  24. What You As A Parent Can Do • Don’t give up on them • Show them you care – talk to them • Spend time with them • Be a detective – find out what their learning (planner, website) • Know who their friends are and meet their parents
