  2. Education During the 20th Century • Students were in rooms of 30-40 per classroom • Students who excelled would help teach kids of lower levels • Teachers got an annual pay of around $325 • Being a teacher was not a job people respected very much • Kids weren’t separated by grade

  3. AFT • The American Federation of Teachers • The first national teachers’ union in the country • They were progressive because they challenged the way school was being run

  4. Causes • Teachers weren’t considered professionals to others • Teachers weren’t trained too well • Students were growing in numbers because of immigrants • Students who excelled were teaching lower levels

  5. Oral History • Mr. Pruneda grew up not speaking English very well and went to school in America • He doesn’t believe that we should have Bilingual Education because people should learn to adapt to the environment and learn English.

Comparing Then and Now Then Now • 30-40 kids per class • Teachers were not trained very well • Some of the people teacher were students themselves. • Standards were not set too high • Not a lot of schools existed • Different grade levels were all in one room • Didn’t have as much technology • Classrooms have better student-teacher ratios. • Teachers go through extensive training • We have more schools with better standards • We have levels for students (Grade levels: Elementary, High School) • We use more technology in our classes
