  1. How Does a Cell Interpret Codons? • Directions: • Read the accompanying worksheet and follow the step-by step directions to make the Transcription/ Translation foldable. Be sure to answer ALL questions on the worksheet while you are completing the foldable. • You may use this PowerPoint as a guide. Do not copy directly from it, or you will not benefit from the activity as much as you should. • You will need your notes packet in order to complete the activity. • If you have any questions, discuss it in your group, and with the group next to you before asking for help from your teachers.

  2. 1. Holding the template with Tabs 3 and 4 facing you, fold the template in half crosswise.

  3. Open the sheet;

  4. then fold the left and right edges toward the center fold. You should see Tab 1 and Tab 2 facing you.

  5. A certain gene has the following base sequence: TACGACAAGTCCACAGTA • Write this sequence from top to bottom on Tab 1 (labeled DNA “Sense” Strand). • Label the top end “ 3’ ” and the bottom end “ 5’ ”. • Write the complementary DNA sequence on Tab 2 (labeled DNA “Coding” Strand). • Label the top end “ 5’ ” and the bottom end “ 3’ ”.

  6. Open Tab 2 (labeled DNA “Coding” Strand).

  7. From top to bottom, write the sequence of the mRNA transcribed from the Template Strand on Tab 3 (mRNA). • Label the top end of the mRNA strand “ 5’ ” and the bottom end “ 3’ ”.

  8. Using either codon chart in your Notes packet, write the amino acid sequence of the polypeptide on Tab 4 (PolypeptideA).

  9. On the Tab 2 (labeled DNA “Coding” Strand), rewrite the nucleotide sequence in the opposite order (flip the sequence from top to bottom). • Remember, the DNA strand is “read” in opposite directions on each strand. • What label will you use for the top end?

  10. From top to bottom, write the sequence of the mRNA transcribed from the Coding Strand on Tab 5 (mRNA).

  11. Using either codon chart in your Notes packet, write the amino acid sequence of the polypeptide on Tab 6 (PolypeptideB).

  12. Reverse the fold on Tab 2. • You should see Polypeptide A and Polypeptide B next to each other.
