  2. What is a nation-state? • State = a recognized sovereign authority over a defined territory • nation = people with a common birth, ie., language and culture • a state defined by its people, with a common culture, not its ruling family or imperial conquests

  3. Are all states today nation-states? • No • Andorra, Liechtenstein, Monaco, Channel Islands, Luxembourg, Malta, Singapore, Nauru, etc.

  4. Do all nations have states? • No • Kurds, Palestinians, Sikhs, Scots, Catalans, Basques, Native American nations, etc.

  5. Many of the world’s people have little national identification • other possibilities? • clan or tribe
