Summary • 99.7% Compliance with Tech Memo statewide • Customers are positive, but satisfaction numbers went down and are nearing negative territory • Many more grooved and wet-reflective markings being used, and unit costs for those are going down • Increase in Preventative Maintenance hampering performance • Marking durability is poor on chip seals and seal coats • New mixes of hot mix asphalt causing some marking adhesion issues • We need to find ways to improve perception and performance of our markings Operations Division

Draft Rumble Tech Memo • Combines two existing Tech Memos • Rumble Strips on Shoulders of Rural Trunk Highways • Edgeline Rumble StripEs Guidance for Rural Trunk Hwys . • Requires the use of centerline rumble stripEs on all 2-way high-speed rural roadways on MnDOTtrunkline • Also requires shoulder rumble strips on all rural roadways with a paved shoulder ≥ 4 feet • Edgeline rumble stripEs can be used in lieu of shoulder rumble strips in all cases, and centerline rumble stripEs on narrow surfaces • MnDOT Bike and Ped section has been involved Operations Division

Pavement Marking Management Tool • Statewide, GIS-based inventory of pavement markings that can be queried by MnDOT staff and the general public • Contains installation and retroreflectivity info • Working with the Center for Transportation Research and Education (CTRE) at Iowa State University Operations Division

  21. Tasks in PMMT Phase II • Pilot Training in two Districts has occurred • Historic installation and retroreflectivity data will be loaded • Pavement marking data collection will be automated for both internal and contractor striping trucks • Central Office and District staff will be trained on how to use the Tool • This will be fully implemented by mid-2011 Operations Division

  22. Emerging issues/activities • Strongly considering requiring all striping contractors to have a data logging system (DLS) in their trucks as part of the Spec Book rewrite • Some of our internal trucks already have these • Contracting out more retroreflectivity readings • More inspection of pavement markings • More analysis of wet-reflective marking effectiveness • Populate the Pavement Marking Management Tool • Considering the use and implementation of wider longitudinal markings per 2009 Federal MUTCD trend Operations Division
