  9. The Hotel/Nonprofit Collaborative • About the Program • The Hotel Nonprofit Collaborative (HNC) is a partnership between hotels and nonprofit organizations located on the San Francisco. The primary focus of this group is to formalize reuse and sharing of resources. • Program Goals • • Take usable discards from the waste stream of hotels and share them with nonprofit organizations. • • Provide in-kind support for nonprofit agencies. • • Support city and state waste reduction mandates for each participating city. • Program Components • • Monthly meetings to share reusable items between hotels and nonprofits. • • “Green business” education for hotel and nonprofit managers to improve operations and reduce costs. • • Recognition and documentation of materials exchanged.

  11. Benefits of Program • Saves Money for Hotels & Non-Profits • By reducing discards, hotels will save on their monthly disposal costs. And, by receiving the reusable items, nonprofits save valuable funds for other program uses.

  12. Benefits of Program • Provides Desired Service • Hotels are looking for ways to be involved with the community while reducing discards. Nonprofits are looking for reusable items. HNC matches these desired services.

  13. Benefits of Program • Helps Cities Meet State Recycling Mandate • Each city is mandated by the state to meet and maintain at least a 50% diversion rate of materials from the waste stream. The HNC helped San Francisco achieve 70% diversion rate.

Recent Statistics • We are now averaging upwards of 10,000 pounds of donated materials per month (we were at 13,741 pounds for August, 2008), which represents a cost savings to the hotels of $80- $250 per month (depending on the volume of donations and type of garbage service they have). • We currently have the active involvement of approximately 25 hotels (with perhaps another 25 sporadically involved) and around 30 non-profits. • Souce: http://ecoclub.com/news/074/interview.html

  20. Non-Profit Commitment • Not always easy – funding, staffing, logistics • Important that non-profit groups meet hotels and organizations face to face to establish relationship. • Why? • Loading Dock Space • Labor and Time of Staff • Management can get turned off by unreliability

Bay Area Regions Adopting • The Model • The Peninsula Hotel Nonprofit Collaborative (PHNC) is modeled on the San Francisco Hotel/Non-profit Collaborative, an informal, grass-roots organization running for nine years. Nearly 40 participants attend each meeting representing about 15 large hotel brands and 20 nonprofit groups who focus on nutrition, job training, and housing. Annually, about 120,000 pounds of material is diverted from the landfill through this group. • Each month, hundreds of items are available for reuse from hotels: • Linens Sofas Pillows Lamps Chairs Desks Food Clock radios Lost and found items Bathroom amenities • PHNC helps find homes for these items by pairing hotels with local nonprofit organizations. • For more information, contact • Debby Kramer RethinkWaste dkramer@RethinkWaste.org650.802.4349

Other Exchanges • Used Amenity Exchange Program – matching hotels w/regular non-profit partners to pick up partially used amenities and toilet paper stubs. • Involvement of BOMA – office furniture, computers and partial rolls of toilet paper. • Energy and Sustainability Programs are now part of our monthly agenda.
