Mon., Oct. 21, 2012 Poetry “How can I write a poem about myself in six words?” • TODAY: • “Time of Your Life” by Green Day • Vocabulary • You in Six Words • What you need: • Pen/pencil • Scissor and glue • Notebook • YOUR BRAIN! • REMINDERS: • This is the beginning of a new grading period…report cards come out at the end of this week • Vocab Quiz #6 will be on Friday instead of Thursday Do Now: “Vocab List 6” – Match the term to the definition. A. stern F. fad B. attire G. insist C. exclude H. inspire D. captivate I. intrigue E. engross J. manipulate clothes, especially expensive or fancy clothes to keep or leave out 3. hard, harsh, or gloomy 4. a temporary fashion 5. to attract and hold someone's attention, often by special charm 6. to take a firm stand 7. to arouse curiosity or interest 8. to control, especially in an unfair way 9. 1) to influence or 2) to motivate 10. to occupy completely Don’t forget to section this space off! DO NOW: 1. Write down each vocab word. 2. Then write down the # of the definition that you think belongs to the vocab word.

  4. Reflect on: • Your memory bank • Your personal narrative • The people in your life • Your accomplishments and failures • How would you summarize the person who you are in six words? What would those words say about you? “How can I use higher level questions when analyzing poetry?”

Tues., Oct. 23, 2012 Reading About Information “How can I read a text for information?” • TODAY: • Review “Do Now” with a partner • Read expository text “Super Croc” • What you need: • Pen/pencil • Notebook • YOUR BRAIN! • REMINDERS: • This is the beginning of a new grading period…report cards come out at the end of this week • Vocab Quiz #6 will be on Friday instead of Thursday Do Now: “Informational Paragraph on Friendship” A. stern F. fad B. attire G. insist C. exclude H. inspire D. captivate I. intrigue E. engross J. manipulate Don’t forget to section this space off! DO NOW: Write a paragraph giving information on the topic of friendship. Include in your paragraph at least 4 vocabulary terms. Do not give your opinion. Do not write a story. Choose an aspect related to the topic of friendship, like How to Make Friends, or How to Lose Friends, or The Importance of Friendship.

Thurs., Oct. 25, 2012 Personal Narrative Reflection • Your Personal Narrative Reflection: • Read through your entire narrative and the feedback given to you by Mrs. C. • In your notebook, on the backside of the page where you pasted your narrative, answer the following questions. (Copy the parts that are in red.) • “Feedback”: In your own words, write the feedback that you received on your narrative. • “What did I do well?”: Write down a list of things that you felt were successful about your narrative. • “What could I have improved on?”: Write down a list of things that you would change to make your narrative better. Feedback: “What did I do well?” “What could I have improved upon?”

Fri., Oct. 26, 2012 Expository Organizational Patterns “How is an expository text organized?” • TODAY: • “Ice Ice, Baby” Instrumental…(finish this line: ”If there’s a problem….”?) • Review “Do Now” • Organizational Pattern Activity • Vocab Group 6 Quiz • What you need: • Pen/pencil • Notebook • YOUR BRAIN! • REMINDERS: • This is the beginning of a new grading period…report cards come out at the end of this week • Expository writing is used to take an idea • and expand on that idea in order to: • Persuade – convince the audience to do • something • Inform – give new insight about a topic or issue • Explain - give details or steps on how to • complete a task • Define – give details about a subject or • main idea Write your questions here! DO NOW: Copy the notes into your notebook as you see them. When you have finished, do a Text 2 Talk with your partner and develop at least two questions to put in the margins for your notes.

Fri., Oct. 26, 2012 Expository Organizational Patterns “How is an expository text organized?” • Expository writing is used to take an idea • and expand on that idea in order to: • Persuade – convince the audience to do • something • Inform – give new insight about a topic or issue • Explain - give details or steps on how to • complete a task • Describe – give details about a subject or • main idea “Topics for Expository Writing” With your partner, discuss at least one topic that could be written for each purpose of expository writing. For example: Persuade – “Parents should not make their kids go to school.” Write your questions here!

  22. Compare…….Contrast Problem…….Solution Cause……..Effect Sequential or Chronological Order “WHAT DO THESE WORDS/WORD PAIRS MEAN TOGETHER?” With you partner, discuss what you know and/or want to know about these pairs of words.

  23. Compare…….Contrast “FOUR SIDES” Activity Directions: THIS ACTIVITY MUST BE DONE WITHOUT TALKING. You will be given a strip of paper that contains one-half of a statement. Your task is to find the person who has the other half of the statement. You must walk around and read each others papers WITHOUT TALKING until you think you have found your match. When you have matched your statement, both people need to bring their strips to me to verify that it is the intended statement. If you and your partner have the correct statement, then the two of you may speak and decide on which side of the room to sit down. If you and your partner do not have the correct intended statement, then the two of you must return with everyone else and continue matching WITHOUT TALKING.
