What is ERIC ? • The Educational Resource Information Center is an online digital library of education research and information. • It is sponsored by the Institute of Education Sciences (IES) of the U.S. Department of Education. • It has more than 1,200,000 records. • It links to more than 100,000 full-text documents.

  3. MISSION The ERIC mission is to provide a comprehensive, easy-to-use, searchable, Internet-based bibliographic and full-text database of education research and information.

  4. KINDS OF DOCUMENTS • Journal articles (600+ journals indexed) • Books • Research Summaries • Conference Papers • Technical Reports • Policy Papers • Other Education-Related Materials

  5. Record vs. Full-text Document • A record is a citation, or information about the document. For example, the title, the author, the name of the journal, the page numbers; 1,200,000 records in ERIC • Full-text means the document itself; 100,000 full-text documents in ERIC.

  8. ERIC / ERIC via EBSCO Directly from publisher From EBSCO. Same search interface as other databases

  9. Advantages of publisher website Search by topic in the Thesaurus Tells about new features

  10. Because Search page is the same as other EBSCO databases, you don’t have to learn something new. Advantages to EBSCO Links to all full-text journals in other EBSCO collections licensed by HCT

  13. FIELDS SU Descriptors- Subject Headings or Indexing Terms: results more specific TX All Text- Like KEYWORD, many results but not specific AB Abstract- Word appears in the abstract summary, more specific results than TX KW Identifiers- Proper names or specific terms

  14. Little words : AND- fewer results OR- more results NOT- specific

  15. You can add other EBSCO Databases to your search

  16. LIMITERS FULL TEXT Try. If not enough results, untick. Your library may have the journal in print. PEER REVIEWED Ask your teacher JOURNAL TITLE

  17. More LIMITERS DATE For example, in last 5 years- in left box 2003 but nothing in box on right • AVAILABILITY • Online, Microfiche, • Not available ERIC Number

  26. Create a new account Now you can read the article again; you don’t have to print it. And, you have a record for your bibliography.
