  2. Secret lists in back of book “If my side had won WW1, I would…” • do what about the costs / damage incurred? • insist on what conditions for the losers? • prevent it happening again – by… ? • want the history books to say… ? • change what about the old style of rule which led to the war?

  3. Now discuss it as a table and make proposals under each heading. Then we can class debate it.

  4. Did you discuss any of these? • Take territory off them? Break them up? • Seize their military equipment / ban them from having armed forces? • Occupy their cities with your troops? • Make them pay tax to you for several years? • Abolish their royal family? • Make history books say you crushed them? • Execute or imprison their leaders? • Propose a peaceful discussion forum in future?

  6. Treaty of Versailles Homework: find out about • where and what Versailles is • why it is “symbolically” important for France • where exactly the treaty was signed and why this was symbolically important • what conditions it imposed on the defeated • how the Germans viewed it

  7. (Gifted) Extension h/w You could also find out about • communist uprisings in German cities • Whites vs Reds in Russia • ethnic division of Europe after WW1 (hint: compare 1914 / 1924 maps) • colonial possessions of the defeated

  8. Role-playing Versailles negotations You have been given a country to play, with a secret list of priorities for your nation. Read the list as a team and memorise. Destroy or hide the info. (Revealing it will weaken your position.) We will role-play the negotiations.

  9. (If you want, you can do the Versailles vote worksheet in teams of 3 at this stage, or move straight onto the full role play.)

Rules of the role-play • One rep at the table (civil servants behind) • Secret notes may be passed (only by CSs) • Teacher or 6th form Chair will referee “factual” questions about the POWER of respective nations • A written statement of outcomes must be created • You must first decide if you have MV, QMV, Great Power voting, or Unanimity conditions • Finish by staging the signing

Consider • Should new countries be cut out of the losers? • What fate for the industrial Rhineland? • Should Germany pay reparations? • What armed forces should the losers keep? • Should the Ottomans be left out of it? • What happens to Germany’s colonies? • How will we prevent it happening again? • Who will be officially blamed for the war?

  12. Assessed writing piece (HW) From all the information you have gathered and shared, and the debates you have taken part in, write 2-3 sides on: “Explain what happened at Versailles, why, what effects it had (in brief), and consider what might have been decided instead.” Marked for level and effort. (+ self-marked.)

  13. Read pp56-7. Complete the work tasks as a group. Then write up (1-2 pages) the outcome of your Versailles role play.
