The International Baccalaureate aims to develop inquiring, knowledgeable and caring young people who help to create a better and more peaceful world through intercultural understanding and respect. • To this end the organization works with schools, governments and international organizations to develop challenging programs of international education and rigorous assessment. • These programs encourage students across the world to become active, compassionate and lifelong learners who understand that other people, with their differences, can also be right.   3. The International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Program is a challenging two-year curriculum, primarily aimed at students aged 16 to 19. It leads to a qualification that is widely recognized by the world’s leading universities. • The IB Program is designed for the highly motivated student seeking educational challenges. • IB is a whole-curricular program. What is the IB diploma program?

  6. What are the Components of the IB Program? Complete the following: Theory of Knowledge Devin Eatmon – TOK teacher CAS (Creativity, Action & Service) Hours Ralene Gideon – CAS Coordinator Extended Essay Kate Hauenstein– EE Coordinator Take 6 IB Subjects/Tests • 3 HL(higher level) • 3 SL(standard level) • English • Foreign Language • Math • Science • History of the Americas • IB Elective (Psychology, 2nd Science, Visual Arts or Theatre)

Higher Level (HL) Exams are: • English • History of Americas • Choose: Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Psychology, Theatre or Visual Arts • (3rdexam chosen based on your student’s academic strengths) • Standard Level (SL) Exams are: • Math • Foreign Language (4 years of language required) • Choose: Psychology or 2nd Science • (3rd exam chosen based on your student’s academic strengths) Requirements and choices…

Students must take the following courses to prepare for these Math Exams: • IB Math Studies SL • Algebra 1, Geometry Pre-IB, Algebra 2 Pre-IB, Pre-Cal Pre-IB and AP Statistics • If Algebra 1 is not taken until 9th grade, student will have to double up and take both Pre-Cal Pre-IB and AP Statistics in 12th gradeor take Geometry in summer school between 9th and 10th grade. • IB Math SL • Algebra 1(8th), Geometry Pre-IB, Algebra 2 Pre-IB, Pre-Cal Pre-IB and IB Math SL (IB Calculus) • IB Math HL • Algebra 1(7th), Geometry Pre-IB (8th), Algebra 2 Pre-IB (9th), Pre-Cal Pre-IB (10th), AP Calculus BC (11th), IB Math HL (12th) IB Math Options:

  9. Only students who complete Algebra 1 and Geometry Pre-AP/IB in middle school are eligible to take the IB HL Math exam. • Bilingual students may take an HL Foreign Language Exam. • Appropriate substitutions will be made for other HL/SL Exams. Exceptions:(Require IB Coordinator approval)

In order to earn an IB Diploma, the student must fulfill the following requirements: • Student must complete all assessment components for each of the six IB Subjects • Students must take at least 3 Higher Level (HL) IB Exams and 3 Standard Level (SL) IB Exams. • IB Exams are scored on a scale of 1-7 and a 4 is considered the passing score. • Students must accumulate a total of at least 24 points on the IB exam scores and 12 of the 24 points must come from the HL exam scores. • Complete the additional IB Diploma Requirements • 150 Creativity, Action and Service (CAS) Hours • Extended Essay • Theory of Knowledge Class How does your student earn the IB Diploma?

  13. Encourage your student to work through the difficulty of Pre-IB courses by • Attending tutoring with teachers. • Asking for help. • Creating study groups for difficult subjects. • Not procrastinating! What can you do to help your student be successful?
