What are the nutritional requirements for school lunches? • School lunches must meet the applicable recommendations of the Dietary Guidelines for Americans, which recommend that no more than 30 percent of an individual's calories come from fat, and less than 10 percent from saturated fat. • Regulations also establish a standard for school lunches to provide one-third of the Recommended Dietary Allowances of protein, Vitamin A, Vitamin C, iron, calcium, and calories.

  4. Nutrient Analysis Menu Planning • Calorie requirements • Grades • Age of Students School lunches must meet Federal nutrition requirements, but decisions about what specific foods to serve and how they are prepared are made by local school food authorities.

  7. School Meal Programs are… • Not an essential program in the education system • Not financially supported by school budgets • Meant to be self-sustainable • Must raise revenues spent each year

  8. Could a Business Achieve Success IF.. • It lost money on every meal • It was told how much to pay their staff • It was told what they could sell • It was constantly asked to give away food and supplies • It had to supply some people with more expensive “special diet” food items

  9. Financial Information • Type A school lunches are an important service to students but are not cost effective. Money is lost on every type A meal a student buys.

Nutrition Programs need help • One very important part to a child’s health and wellness • Activity – the need for more opportunities • Let’s get them moving in the morning to help cut down on student absences and tardiness – kids will come in because the first part of the day is fun! • Nutrition Education – coming from more places • Remember that real change takes time

  18. Our Menus - Take a closer look • Pizza has low fat cheese & whole grain crust • Bread and rolls contain whole grains • USDA recipes are constantly being revised to be healthier, have more fiber & less fat • Can we still improve? • ABSOLUTELY!
