  1. Helpus STOP... Verbal Child Abuse!

  2. The Ways to Help... • Talk to child. • Talk to abuser. • Keep in touch. • Contradict negative Statements. • Educate everyone. • Tell someone else.

  3. Talk to the Child Talk to the abused child. Make him or her aware of their situation, if possible without accusing anyone. Some methods you could use are listed below.

  4. Talk to the Abuser If you know the abuser well, try to talk to them, maybe independently of the child, of verbal child abuse. This is a delicate topic, so you should treat it with care. You can approach it however you want, but there is one main rule: NEVER directly accuse the abuser! Else he will not want to listen.

  5. Keep in Touch Keep in touch with the victim to help him/her along. You can help the child by just being there and supporting it. The more people that are around, the less the child is alone with the abuser.

  6. Contradict Negative Statements Remember, every compliment you make rules out one of the negative comments!Whenever the abuser says or does something, you should react, if possible with a witty answer. One example from the Case Study. Abusive Statement: “You just eat so many sweets because you’re not sweet enough on the inside.” Contradiction: “Or maybe because the people around her aren’t being sweet enough to her?”

  7. Educate everyone Educate the world about this issue. Who knows, maybe someone who lives near you is abusing a child without even realizing it! The more people you educate, the more cases of verbal child abuse can be eliminated. It’s worth it!

  8. Tell Someone Else If you are observing a case of verbal child abuse, tell someone else. Together you are much stronger. If several people tell the abuser that they are being horrible, they might listen more than if just one person says it.
