  4. Be Healthy A4. Are learners able to make informed choices about their own health and well-being? “To make their judgements, inspectors will evaluate the extent to which learners have the knowledge and understanding to enable them to make informed choices about their health and well-being.”

  5. Further guidance from Ofsted • Inspectors should take into account, where relevant: • use of available learner health and well-being data to identify the health needs of all groups, including the most vulnerable • use of learners’ views on the range and quality of health-related services provided • partnership work with external agencies to support delivery and facilitate referral to specialist services • learners’ awareness of the consequences of smoking, alcohol abuse and drugs, insufficient physical exercise and an unhealthy diet • learners’ participation in activities which tackle key aspects of learners’ physical and mental health, well-being and emotional development • learners’ opportunities to access confidential support • learners’ involvement in developing a range of opportunities and activities which are inclusive and have high rates of participation, to increase their levels of physical activity and to improve the uptake of healthy food choices within the provider’s setting.  • Source: Ofsted: Handbook for the Inspection of Further Education & Skills from September 2009 (Page 48)

  6. Experience so far “They were almost obsessive about health and safeguarding. The inspector made it very clear that they wanted evidence about ECM” (London college) “One of the development areas identified for us was to gather evidence of student and staff needs” (London College) "Very data driven - a big change from previous inspections - the inspectors kept asking "how can you back that up?" and there was also a big emphasis on learner voice." (East Midlands College)
