  2. Herodes Atticus • Prominent Roman rhetorician • Roman name: Lucius Vibullius Hipparchus Tiberius Claudius Atticus Herodes Marathonios • None of his speeches remain • Richest man in Athens • Second Sophistic Era: Herodes was the greatest orator of the time

  3. Herodes Atticus • Re-built Panathenaic stadium in 144 A.D. • Rebuilt in 1896 for Olympic Games • Athenians were impressed over Stadium • Served as archon at Athens and consul at Rome • Officiated as the Priest of Dionysus at the Panathenaic Festivals • Died in 178 A.D. at seventy-six
