  4. Summarizing a story means telling the story in a short way. Make sure to tell the important parts. It may help to think about where the story takes place. It may help to think about the beginning, middle and end. It may help to think about who the story is about.

  5. The theme of a story is a big idea you can learn from reading and thinking about the story. What might happen in your life that can help you understand the big idea? What does the author want you to know? Do the characters learn a lesson?

  6. A story’s plot is what happens in the beginning, middle and end of the story. In many stories the events of the story tell how a character’s problem is solved.

  7. Drawing Conclusions • Authors don’t always come right out and tell you everything in a story. • Sometimes you are given clues. Like a detective, you have to use the words and pictures to figure out the story!

  8. The order that events take place is called Sequence. Words like first, next and last help readers figure out the order of events. Good readers pay attention to the order in which things happen. Next close the sandwich. First put the meat and cheese on the bread. Last eat the sandwich.
